How to merge tags

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi. The number of tags in my blog is increasing. Some of them sound very similar, so it’d make sense to merge them under one name. Is there a way to do that?
The only thing I can think of is this. Once i know what tags i want to menge, I could EDIT each tag by inserting the SAME NEW TAG NAME. Would that work? I thought I’d post this before attempting something that may wreck up all my tags.Cheers!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

PS: I tried the above, and it didn’t work. The system does not allow to change tags to an identical new name. One other thing I noticed is that when I changed one tag’s name, the original tag disappeared from the VIEW POST view ( at the bottom of the post), but the new one was also not there. The change was only visible in the EDIT POST mode.

anyway, anyone knows how to merge tags? (-:

Please paste the URL of your blog when asking questions here, or link your username to your blog (as explained in the Sticky 8 Things to Know Before Posting). Helps us help you.

You can edit tag x1 (if necessary), delete x2, then use bulk edit to add x1 back to the posts originally tagged with x2.

But before yo do that, you need to eliminate another redundancy. Tags and categories are exactly the same thing, and they function in exactly the same way as far as search engines are concerned, so there’s no point in using the same word or phrase as both a tag and a category. Moreover, such duplicates will refuse to be edited, plus you get a permalink problem if you use subcategories.

Dear panaghiotisadam, thank you for your post. First, my WP site was indicated in my post. In fact, since I was logged in, it was automatically inserted by the system. So I guess, before you scold people, make sure you have all the information you need. If the website didn’t show on my post, then it’s a system issue, not due to my absentmindedness. amen.
Back to the tag issue. As I mentioned in my second post, when I change a tag name, and then review the post, neither the new nor the old tag appear. Only when I check the post in the EDIT MODE I can see the change. Is it just my page, or it this a system issue?

The URL is known displayed only to Staff and the support bot. We Volunteers who actually answer questions cannot see it. Moreover, we Volunteers are compelled to ask for the URL each and every time anyone posts to this forum so we can confirm that it’s a wordpress.COM blog and not a wordpres.ORG blog that is being referred to.

If you do not wish to either link your blog to your username or to reveal the URL for the blog to which your refer each and every time you post to this peer support forum the good news is you do have another choice. You can file support tickets for your questions and get all answer directly from Staff. Here’s the link:

    @worldconnections:

    • There’s no system issue: the system asks for your blog URL so that you get an immediate auto-response if you paste the URL of a wp.ORG instead of wp.COM blog (saves us the pain of having to explain to all those people that they’re in the wrong forum). The URL you paste doesn’t show up here, as you’ve found out, and that’s intentional (to respect the right of the occasional blogger who doesn’t want to make the blog known to everyone else).

    • Another reason we need the blog link is that often we must check things in the blog itself before we can give a relevant answer. And we’re not obliged to go searching for it: the least you can do to make things easier for us is give us the link. We’re not paid employees at your service, we’re just fellow bloggers willing to help.

    • You’re overlooking that I DID search for and found your blog nevertheless; how else do you think I knew you’ve got duplicate tags/categories?

    • I wrote “Please paste the URL [etc …] Helps us help you”, and then proceeded to addressing your problem as best I could; if you call that “scolding”, then you’ve got some issues with either your vocabulary or your personality.

    • Yes, my remark was “due to your absentmindedness”, because there’s a sticky up top on the main page that says “8 Things to Know BEFORE posting”. Check item 2.

(Must be your vocabulary after all – apparently you don’t know what “before posting” means.)

    • As for your second question, updated tags take some time to show up.

  • Unknown's avatar

Ok, panaghiotisadam. I re-read your posts and you are clearly poorly equipped with people’s skills to deal with customer’s issue. Your ongoing bashing and comntinuous innuendos would not be condoned in a customner service environment. Feel free to complain to your supervisor. I have already file a coplained about the way you have responded to my query.
And since, from what you wrote, you already knew my blog address, I believe all the fuss you raised was not necessary.
    Best regards

PS: Thank you timethief for your helpful post and for the respect you show for customer. A sriking difference from the rudeness displayed by panaghiotisadam

Definitely vocabulary issues… (Example of obscure incomprehensible phrase: “We’re not paid employees at your service, we’re just fellow bloggers willing to help.”)

And since I did answer your question in my first post, the link request was no “fuss”: it was a (standard) suggestion for future questions – to make things faster for both you and us, as the Sticky “Before Posting” clearly explains. The fuss was raised by you, with your unwarranted reaction to a polite suggestion, your Amens and the rest. (To return to the vocabulary issues, check “projection” in your dictionary.)

    Take care.

In the future, if you want to avoid all the drama and having to take the time to personally insult volunteers, I suggest you follow the instructions in the thread at the top of the forum called 8 Things to Know Before Posting in the Forum.
