How to merge tags?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,

I currently clean up my tag and categories. I wonder how I can merge tags… I have two very similar tags…

    – Photo
    – Photos

I want the “photo” tags and posts merged into the “photos” tag

I can not do this manually as there are hundreds of posts with the “photo” tag, as same as there are hundreds of posts with the “photos” tag. Any idea?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

There is no “merge” process that I am aware of. We can edit tags and convert existing categories to tags or tags to categories, selectively

See here please http://diaryofdennis.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=post_tag where you can edit Tags.

I am still unsure what my solution could be.

Do you mean I can just rename the “photo” tag to “photos” and it will merge with the tag?

Or should I convert the tag “photo” to a category, rename the category to “photos”, and convert it back to a tag to merge it with the excisting “photo” tag?

I wondeer which solution would work without messing things up :D

Search engines consider categories and tags to be one in the same thing. Assigning a category to a keyword that is so close to the tag i.e. only one letter difference may not produce a good result. The assumption may be that you are tag spamming AKA spamdexing and that would be a very bad result in the SERPs.

re: your back a forth idea
I would try that in a test blog to see what the result is.

The bottom line is that I can’t provide an elegant solution that will not result in broken 404 page not found links.

The numbers of posts in each are relevant as the only way to proceed is manually. I think what I would do is delete the photo tag and convert the photos tag to photography or photographs.

Maybe Staff will have a better solution. You can type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for Staff help. Thanks time, I tagged my request modlook, meanwhile I experiment a little on my private testblog.

  • Hi @diaryofdennis, so you could work through a ‘merge’ of sorts by bulk editing posts. But @timethief makes a fine point here:

The bottom line is that I can’t provide an elegant solution that will not result in broken 404 page not found links.

If you are getting lots of link traffic to the tag archives as they stand, I would leave them as is, or possibly add all of the posts in “photo” to “photos” (or vice versa as you like.)

If you don’t get a lot of links to tag-based URLS on your site, though, and don’t mind deleting one of the tags, here’s how to move all of the posts to another tag in WP-Admin. I’ve done this recently myself.

    1) Go to WP-Admin > Posts > Tags

    2) Find the tag you want to get rid of, and click on the number. This will bring up all posts with that tag

    3) Click the box next to Title to select all of the posts

    4) Under Bulk Actions, choose Edit, and click Apply

    5) Type the new, proper tag name, and click Update

    6) Now go back to Posts > Tags and find your old tag again. You can delete it, because all of those posts are under the new tag now. Or if it won’t result in too many tags / categories on those posts, you can leave both tags in place.

Here are a few (possibly helpful) screenshots from my test site:

    I hope that helps!

Thank you Supernovia, yesterday I tested some stuff on my testblog as well and came to the same solution you posted. Fortunately there was not much traffic to the “photo” tag on my main blog, and I didn’t link too often to that particular tag. To be extra sure, I went through at least 50 all time top posts to see if there are links to the tag. I do now only have the “photos” tag and used the same solution as you. Thanks!

  • Perfect. I’m glad you worked it out :)

Hooray! I love it when issues are resolved. :)
