How to migrate BACK to external site after migrating to wordpress.com

About 15 months ago I moved my blog http://www.burntmyfingers.com from an external server to wordpress.com and purchased the custom domain upgrade so I could keep the same url. Now I want to change it back. I have followed the migration instructions and exported the .com content as xml. The old blog still exists on my external server so my thought was to delete its WP database, leaving the admin files intact, and import the .com content.

However, when I go to “my sites” in the admin panel on wordpress.com there is a red triangle next to burntmyfingers.com and when I click it it says “this site cannot be accessed”. I fiddled around and found a screen that says “your Jetpack may need to be updated” but I can’t access the external site’s wp-admin to update it.

What to do? I’m guessing I can edit the domain under https://burntmyfingersdotcom.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains to stop redirecting but don’t know how to do this.

Also, should I delete the old blog entirely from my external server and just start from scratch then import the posts? I have not made design changes since I went to .com so I’m hoping I don’t have to do that.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Will you please make sure your Jetpack plugin is updated to the latest version which is 3.7.2?

After do that please clear your browser cache http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

Thanks, but where is my Jetpack plugin? It doesn’t appear on the dashboard for the wordpress.com hosted version of burntmyfingers.com and I can’t access the dashboard for my own server.

Should I go to “My Sites” then choose “disconnect site” which brings up the prompt “Disconnect Jetpack/Disconnecting Jetpack will remove access to WordPress.com features for Burnt My Fingers”? Will I then be able to see Jetpack on the dashboard for the external site?

  • Hi,

The old blog still exists on my external server so my thought was to delete its WP database, leaving the admin files intact, and import the .com content.

If you deleted the database itself, your WordPress.org installation won’t be able to function.

Here’s what you’ll want to do:

    – Get your old copy of WordPress up and running again. If your host has a backup, that would work, or you can make a fresh installation
    – Export / Import (we have some tips here)
    – Point the domain to your new (old) host
    – Connect to Jetpack
    – Make sure everything’s working on the new site
    – And then, after everything’s set up, you’ll want to go ahead with moving your subscribers over

Thanks! But how do I access the old copy of WordPress? On my dashboard it is not accessible and the URL resolves to the wordpress.com forwarding address (which is burntmyfingersdotcom.wordpress.com). Should I disconnect Jetpack? Should I go to Store>My Domains and change the “A” address to point to my previous server?

Also once I get through this process, since many of the posts still exist on the old site am I going to have duplicates of all those posts?

  • If you need the old copy, please work with your host to get the database restored. WordPress won’t work at all without a database.

Alternatively, you could create a new install (which would create a new database at the same time.)

For now, don’t worry about Jetpack since you’ll need WordPress working before you can configure it. Thanks!

  • Also, if you need more help getting WordPress.org working, you can explain the issue here:

    Good luck!
