    Hi @performancetestengineer,

There are a few ways to monetize your site, some you can do with a free site (adding a PayPal button for example), and for some you need an upgraded account (WordAds). So it really depends on the way you want to monetize your site. Please read more about it here:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/monetize-your-site/

    Hi,

If i upgrade to personal plan then can i able to monetize my site?
Wanted to know can i migrate my wordpress blog to blogger which is providing a free way to monetize?

Most of the ways you can monetize your site on WordPress.com are free (affiliate linking, sponsored/pre-written posts or selling physical and digital products, and requesting donations or tips are all free). The only monetize option you would need an upgraded account for would be the advertising (WordAds). For this you would need either a Premium or a Business plan, so a Personal plan would not be enough.

There is a free back door even here though. If you have a page that has thousands of pageviews every month and appropriate content, you could also have advertisements (WordAds) on your website without having the Premium or Business plan.

All the information about monetizing your site is found in this support article:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/monetize-your-site/

So short answer is: you don’t even need a Personal plan to monetize your site. You could potentially do it on a free account, but it depends on how you want to monetize your site.

Unfortunately I´m not a staff member so I would not be able to help you with this. But check out the link below. There is more information about WordAds there, and you can also apply there. My guess is that you need more than 1k page views per month to get WordAds with a free account, since it said thousands (plural). But it´s worth a shot =)

I’m not too familiar in that area I’m afraid, so I’ve tagged this thread for staff attention. Hopefully you’ll get a reply from a staff member soon.

i got to know to monetize the blog we need to buy a custom domain name?

Yes, you have to have a custom domain.

is it not possible to monetize with free site?

    No, it is not possible.

See first please: Types of Blogs that are allowed and not allowed http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

Affiliate marketing blogs: Blogs with the primary purpose of driving traffic to affiliate programs and get-rich-quick schemes (“Make six figures from home!!”, “20 easy steps to top profits!!”, etc). This includes multi-level marketing (MLM) blogs and pyramid schemes. To be clear, people writing their own original book, movie or game reviews and linking them to Amazon, or people linking to their own products on Etsy do NOT fall into this category. http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/

Blogger initiated third party advertising is not allowed at WordPress.COM. Affiliate links are allowed on WordPress.com as long as the primary purpose of your blog is to create original content.

Please also read: Monetize Your Site next https://en.support.wordpress.com/monetize-your-site/ also note affiliate linking section https://en.support.wordpress.com/monetize-your-site/#affiliate-linking in that support doc.

No advertising banners or widgets are allowed.

The only advertising program at WordPress.com is called WordAds and it’s for blogs on their own domains that have enough traffic to qualify for acceptance into the plan.

  • Hi folks, to clarify, you need a plan and custom domain to be eligible for WordAds, however that is not the only way to monetize a site.

If you have a contract with some company that would like to a few display ads on your free site, you can actually go ahead and do that. You can also use affiliate links that you negotiate on your own.

    However:

    – The site can’t primarily exist to drive traffic elsewhere

    – We do have a few restrictions on the types of sites you can link to (for example, no phishing links)

    – You won’t be able use ad programs if they require unsupported code: http://en.support.wordpress.com/code/

I hope that helps :) Please see more info here:

Sorry for misleading you @performancetestengineer. Since @timethief gave such an elaborate answer I’ve removed the tag for staff attention.

  • Unknown's avatar

that is not the only way to monetize a site.

True. I should have posted this instead.

Please be aware that there is no secure payments system here at wordpress.COM and you cannot add a shopping cart to sites hosted by wordpress.COM regardless of upgrades.

E-commerce options have been removed here at WordPress.COM. Secure payment systems are not available here at wordpress.COM. You need a wordpress.ORG install. Please read this https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/e-commerce-22?replies=17#post-2575955

There is no FTP access to any wordpress.com sites. WordPress.com sites have some built in plugins http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/. However, if you are reading anything that makes you think that we bloggers can install plugins, advertising, custom themes or third party themes on sites hosted by wordpress.COM, then you are mistaken/misinformed. We have never had that ability. You are confusing wordpress.COM hosted blogs and wordpress.ORG installs on paid hosting.

Provided you are selling only what you yourself make or a providing service that you personally provide on a wordpress.COM site, or you are asking for donations you have two options.

    (1) PayPal – Know that the only instructions that will work for posting a PayPal donation button on a WordPress.com blog are found here http://en.support.wordpress.com/paypal/
Note that the PayPal email link is not supported and PayPal customization options are not supported either https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/paypal-button-41?replies=12#post-2517229 This is not likely to be changed any time soon, if at all.

    (2) If you set up an eCommerce site somewhere else online you can create a custom menu http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/ and include a custom link to that site in it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-custom-links

Some bloggers create a contact form https://en.support.wordpress.com/contact-form/ on a page and after the people have made a PayPal donation they provide the link to a private page for downloading files. Maybe that will work for you.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-visibility/

If what I provided above at (1) and (2) do not suit you, then this guide will explain how to move your WordPress.com site to another hosting platform: Moving to Self-Hosted WordPress where you can set up a secure payment system http://move.wordpress.com

@supernovia, Could you help me with adding affiliate banners to my blog, provide me steps.

I just wanna see some ads or banners from affiliate links in my website

  • @performancetestengineer we don’t provide support for outside affiliate programs because they vary.

In general though you will try to find products or services that match your site content, look at those websites to see if they have affiliate programs and what their requirements are, and find out if can use html images / links (without iframes or scripts) with their programs.
