How to Move a Site from a Hosted Server *TO* WordPress.com

Want to move a site from a hosted server to WordPress.com.

I would like to move a site from a hosted server to WordPress.com. Frankly I’m tired of dealing with hackers, updates to plugins & WordPress. I know I will lose some capabilities. I’d rather have less options & let WordPress.com deal with the hassle.

I actually have TWO sites that would be moved in the long run. Both have blogs and a few pages.

I know most people are asking how to go in the opposite direction — but I’m wanting to move TO WordPress.com. My current hosting company is GREAT! No fault with them at all. It’s the hassle of maintaining my own site — and I’m the ONLY one doing it all. I want to spend time writing & researching.

Would appreciate any help you can give me. ~ Lynda Peach (also known as idogenealogy)

    Hi there,
I did the same thing for the same reason back in 2009. See here please:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible.

Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually. In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL. If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the blog and purchase a domain name by purchasing an annually renewable domain mapping upgrade for the blog.

    Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.

You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase upgrades for the blog.

If you own a domain then see here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

Dashboard > Store > My Upgrades is where you do the primary blog set up knowing it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

Wow timethief! What a fantastic reply. And fast too!

I’m willing to let my domain name die (at the end of its renewal) and switch to idogenealogy.wordpress.com. I don’t have THAT big of readership. Yea — my business cards will be wrong & so will my coffee cup but that’s the breaks.

Another reason I need to change is $$. Between purchases of themes & a couple of widgets (one of which I ended up never using…grrrrr). I’m for simple.

Having done my own WordPress admin work for almost three years & umpteen years of HTML & CSS before tha,t I’m willing to work with free themes and what “free” gives me.

As I will still have control of the “space” on my hosting account (I’m working on a site done in TNG** there), I can put a simple index.html file that redirects where it needs to.

I’m going to go through your email in detail & read all of the links. Thank you!

If I were you I’d renew the domain name. It’s always worth holding on to.

Thanks raincoaster — I just renewed it in Oct so I have plenty of time to think about it.
