how to move old posts to new pages?
-
I have posted quite a few blog posts for a Trans-Siberian trip and am now starting to add older travel posts that were sent as email entries. What I’d like to do is put all of the posts I’ve written onto one page and put the newer posts on a new page. However, in reading some of the previous posts, it seems that you can’t move posts; they always remain with the main page. Another person wrote that I can divide them by categories but I am not sure how to do that.
What I’m looking for, is/are links on the right side that read, say, 2007 Croatia, 2008 China, 2009 Trans-Siberian, 2010 China, etc., and when that link is clicked on, it takes one to the posts for that entry or category. I tried adding new categories to the posts but the new category did not appear in the link (category) page list? Also, when I click on “travel” category, I am linked to ALL of the travel blogs in wordpress, not my own.
I’ve considered making a page for each travel group and listing out links to each blog entry but there has to be an easier way?
thanks in advance

Be aware that posts and pages are two different animals. Posts can be categorized, but pages can not.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/To sort your articles by categories (or tags), they must be posts. Your categories could be ” 2007 Croatia, 2008 China, 2009 Trans-Siberian, 2010 China” A post can have more than one category, so you could also have categories separating posts by country, by means of transportation, food, and so on.

The tags and cats above (or below depending on theme) will link to “global tags” and the tags and categories in widgets or cloud widgets in your side bar will link to posts on your own blog.

Apparently I’m invisible in the forums again. Though my latest post did appear.
I want to see if posting a second time will work. BTW, I have contacted Support.

thanks 1tess; I do have another question…:
I do believe that in my sidebar, the category list(s) will be sorted alphabetically; if I have “2009 China,” and “2009 Trans-Siberian,” the China will be listed above the Trans-Siberian even though it happened “later.” How can I set the correct “order” of my items in the category list?
-
By changing the wording (for instance “2009 a.” etc, “2009 b.” etc), or by copying the category URLs and creating a so-called unordered list in a text widget.
-
I had considered doing 2009a, 2009b, but seems a bit “untidy.”
If I type the URL for the link in a list widget, will the actual
URL appear or will the “name” of the link appear? – trying to
figure this out; do I post the shortlink? or is there something
I’m missing? thanks -
No, you must create links to the category URLs, and arrange them using the code for an unordered list. See here:
-
I see you have done the a, b, c ‘suffixes’ to the dates.
It is unnecessary to write the links by hand to make a list in the order you want in a text widget.
Just go to “view source” in your browser, and use the browser’s “find” feature to locate “Previous posts.” Below that line copy the links in the unordered list. The list begins with:
<ul class='snap_preview xoxo blogroll'> <li><a href="http://wp.me/pGlqm-5v">2006 India (archive)</a></li> <li><a href="http://wp.me/pGlqm-3">2009 10 05 Odessa, Ukraine</a></li> <li><a href="http://wp.me/pGlqm-z">2009 10 07 train to Rostov-on-Don</a></li> <li><a href="http://wp.me/pGlqm-J">2009 10 08 Rostov-on-Don</a></li> <li><a href="http://wp.me/pGlqm-1j">2009 10 09 Rostov to Volgograd</a></li>Paste them into a new draft page or post in the html editor.
Then just arrange them as you like using copy and paste or select and drag.
Save draft.
When you are satisfied, copy the code into a text widget and put that into your sidebar. Remove the “Previous posts” widget.(of course, you will want to change the dates to remove the a, b, or c before re-arranging your links;
and whenever you add posts you will have to update “by hand” again.) -

I did a workaround by creating a page for each “trip” and linking each story and its photo. This fix seems to work for me ok, a little bit of work to get them all lined up, but once they were lined up, its only a little extra work for each new post.
