How to not have a blurry header image

  • Unknown's avatar

I am using the 2014 theme and would like to have a choice of headers. The recommended image size is 1260×240. I am finding it difficult because my images come out blurry. Should I compress my images or should I leave the file size alone? I wanted to make the sure the original image, with a 2 to 4 megapixel size, does not slow the page upload for a visitor but reducing the size creates a blurry image. Thanks.

    Hi there,

If you are using a smaller image size in the first place (2 to 4 megapixel) and then cropping it to 1260×240, then it will indeed be blurry as you will be dealing with significantly fewer pixels per square inch and the resolution will just not pleasing to the eye. You should start with the largest resolution that you have available and crop that to the dimensions in question. If you find that it loads too slowly (which isn’t likely since you are cropping it relatively small), then you can always reduce the quality later. You can never put quality back though!
