How to offer a download to subscribe to my blog and thus create a mailing list
-
I want to offer a download if they sign up for my blog. I signed up to mail chimp as it seemed on the web that was the way to do it. However it seems that I cannot do that unless I am self hosted which I guess that means $100/year. Is there not another way within wordpress to do that?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You can do it, but you cannot do it technically “within” WordPress.com. You just take the code Mailchimp gives you and put it in some external webspace: Tumblr, Google Docs, whatever, it doesn’t matter as long as it allows the code. Then you link to that either in your header with a Custom Menu or in a text widget.
You can do it manually, ie without mailchimp registration, by putting a contact form in your blog and just emailing people the download and manually adding them to your mailing database.

First you are talking to a newbie to web configuration and design….much of the lingo I grasp but most I have to chew on it for a bit before it sinks in. I guess you are saying there is no way to auto send the download. I am away from my computer for extended periods of time, I mean weeks at at time, so an auto download would be best for me, but still would like to know who received it. Thanks for the assistance…I have much more digging to do to get all of this

Then you need to do the first of my two suggestions, embed that code in some page external to WordPress.com.
