How to Only Show a Few Posts On Home Page
-
Hi,
I’ve been maintaining my blog since October and have always had it set to show only the most recent 3 posts on the homepage. I have not changed any settings but all of a sudden (not sure why) EVERY post is showing up on the homepage. I searched the forums and someone recommended going to posts>screen options, which I did and I selected to only show 3 posts and clicked “apply”. Unfortunately this hasn’t resolved the issue. I don’t know why my settings suddenly changed or how to get it back to what it was.
If anyone has any advice on how to fix this I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks!

Hello there,
Staff have introduced “infinite scroll” to some themes and will be implementing it on all themes that have a suitable structure for infinite scroll. This is a site wide change. If you have a theme with footer widgets like Bueno you can use a workaround to regain control over how many posts are displayed on the front page of your blog. If you have a theme with footer widgets all you need to do is install an empty text widget into any footer area for widgets. When you do that there will be an option displayed on this pgae > Settings > Reading to disable infinite scroll. Once you have done that your number of posts set on that same Reading page will prevail.https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/to-infinity?replies=137

Thanks timethief. I went into the widgets page and I see three empty boxes to the right labeled footer 1,2, and 3. I don’t see any options that say “settings” on the widgets page. Do you know how I can proceed? Maybe I’m missing something?
Thanks,

> Appearance > Widgets
Go to any footer box 1, 2 or 3 and click to open
Then locate a text widget in the Available Widgets box and drag it into the footer box
Click the text widget to open it
Do bot enter anything into it
click “save” and “close” inside the text widget.View the front of your blog and see this at the botom of the page

Hi timethief,
I tried clicking on each footer box but nothing happened. So I opened up the text widget and selected footer 3. I did not enter anything into the large text box, but I selected footer 3 and pressed “save widget”. Now it says “position 1” next to footer 3 in the text widget window.
I went to the blog again and now my homepage shows the 7 most recent posts instead of every post…which is an improvement. However because my posts are very image heavy I would really like to limit the visible posts to 3 on the home page. Do you know if this is possible?
Thanks,
DR -
Yes it’s possible, in Settings > Reading.
But better use the more tag to truncate the posts:

When I go to “settings”, there is no tab or link to “reading”.
Are we talking about the “settings” tab on the left side column under “appearance”, “users”, and “tools”? -
Yes. If you hover over Settings, a flyout should show up, and this flyout should include General, Writing, Reading, etc.

Thanks justpi! That was totally over my head. Now once I go to settings > reading, what can I do there to set it up to show the 3 most recent posts on my homepage?
“front page displays- latest posts” is already selected. -
Sorry, you can’t do anything: Settings > Reading should include the option “Blog pages show at most [n] posts”, but I forgot that a couple of days ago WP disabled that option in the themes in which infinite scrolling was added. Infinite wisdom…

Wow, this is so frustrating. Good thing this is my last post on this blog and I am transfering to a new blog shortly now that my travel experience is over. If you have any suggestions for an alternative to wordpress.com I would be interested to hear them. Would love to stay with wordpress but don’t think that’s going to happen.
Thanks again for your help.

You’re welcome.
Sorry, I’m not familiar with other platforms: other volunteers will probably be able to advise you on this. -

I’m also noticing that most of my slideshows now will not load. Would anyone have any ideas how to fix this? So frustrating as the blog looked and functioned so well with the old settings. :(

@dominicanroots
May we please have you post an active link starting with http:// to a post wherein your sideshow stopped working? -
Thanks Timethief,
ForTitan theme
I figured it out and it was not difficult at all.
For others with this problem…
Dashboard>appearance>widgets>select right, center or left…
There is an available blog roll widget, drag into widget and save.
I have my blog roll back….yeah
Thanks…. -

Oooh! I don’t know why or how but now my homepage shows only 3 posts again! I haven’t done anything different since yesterday. I don’t know why it’s back the way I wanted it but I am glad.
timethief…yesterday my homepage was loading 7 posts at a time after I had unchecked the “to infinity & beyond” option. The slideshows in the first few posts would load but the slideshows in the posts further down the screen wouldn’t and were just showing up as long black rectangles.
In any case, things seem fine for now. As always, thanks for your help. It is much appreciated.

@dominicanroots
I know exactly what you mean because I did visit your blog more than once and I saw 7 posts displaying. Thanks goodness this is working again for you (fingers crossed) and best wishes for happy blogging. -
Thanks timethief. All of a sudden wordpress is one big mystery…
Thank goodness for you and all you do to help others in these forums!
