How To Only Show Post Excerpts on Home Page
-
I recently changed my theme to Independent Publisher. I like everything about it except the fact that it shows my whole post on the home page meaning I won’t be able to track how many people actually open which posts. Is there a way to change it to only be an excerpt or the first few sentences? I don’t want to change the theme because I like everything else about it.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You must be logged in under the exact same username that registered the site to be able to access the site. The Admin login link to the dashboard for every blog hosted by wordpress.COM is:
http://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
*Replace NAME_OF_BLOG in that URL with the actual name of your blog.
I recommend bookmarking that link or memorizing it.
If you are not logged in under the correct username account then clear your browser cache https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache and cookies https://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/#clearing-wordpress-com-cookies prior to logging into another account
The Reading Settings page summary setting changes the RSS feed display only and does not impact the posts on the site.
https://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php
*Replace NAME_OF_BLOG withe the actual name of your blog in that URL.
If you want to display only post excerpts on the front page or the blogs page of the blog followed by read more links, you can insert “the more tag” into each post prior to publication.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/more-tag/The read more tag can be inserted once only into any post to change the front page or main page for posts display from full post to an excerpt. The split in the text does not display to you in preview mode but it will be there after the post is published.
Please Read Go Back and Edit Posts https://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/#go-back-and-edit-posts and be sure to click Update to publish the after your editing.
For other ways to splitting content see > https://en.support.wordpress.com/splitting-content/

meaning I won’t be able to track how many people actually open which posts
Our stats are page view stats. https://en.support.wordpress.com/stats/ If I visit your blog and click into 10 posts that will be recorded as 1 visitor and 10 page views. But please do not assume that everyone who clicks a follow, like, share, reblog or comment link actually reads the post on your blog because odds are they may not.
Follow, like, share, reblog or comment clicks are not page views. In fact, follows, likes, shares, comments and reblogs are completely misleading when you are talking about page view stats. That is because your followers and anyone with a WordPress.com/Gravatar account who is logged into WordPress.com can “follow” your blog, “like”, “share” and “reblog” your posts and “comment” in several locations such as the Reader, without ever clicking into your blog and creating a single page view stat. Subscribers control how frequently they receive your posts (instantly, daily, weekly) and can comment without clicking into the blog.
Logged in wordpress.com members can read full posts in the wordpress.COM Reader now, so there is no incentive for them to click into your site.
We cannot prevent the full display of a whole post in the WordPress.com Reader. However, when it comes to what’s emailed to subscribers it is drawn from our RSS Feed for published posts and we can select to display only a summary and not the full post.
