How to operate Columns plugin

I am trying to create columns in my front page, I have dl’d the plugin Columns but don’t know how to make it work. How do you create shortcodes etc. I am an extreme newbie and need exact directions. Can’t assume I know any step. Am willing to read whatever might help me on this.

There is no FTP access and no plugin capability on free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

You do not need to create a table to have 2 columns in posts or pages. See https://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/06/10/formatting-text-pt-1/
