How to optimize external links for better SEO in WordPress?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi everyone,

I run a blog where I share content about mobile games like Avatar World APK at [Redacted by staff]. While publishing posts, I often link to different resources and I’m a bit confused about the best SEO practices for handling outbound links in WordPress.

    My main questions are:

    1. Do all external links need rel="nofollow", or should some be kept dofollow?
    2. Is it recommended to open outbound links in a new tab (target="_blank") for better user experience?
    3. Are there any good plugins that can help manage or track external links without affecting site speed?

Would appreciate advice from anyone experienced with SEO and WordPress link management.

    Thanks a lot!

  • Hello there,

Good questions. As a general rule, you use nofollow ugc for less authoritative sites. If the link is pointing to a reputable source, then you can leave it as a normal link. Marking everything as no follow could make the site seem unnatural to search engines, and you always want to aim for a site that feels created by a “human”.

New tabs are really down to user experience, but most people avoid them.

It really depends on your hosting with that. It looks https://avatarwrldapk.com isn’t with us here at WordPress.com, so it might be worth reaching out to your host for advice. If you’d like to move your site to us at WordPress.com then we can certainly look into that and the best approach on our hosting. Just let us know if you would like to move over.

    Hope that helps!

To optimize external links in WordPress for better SEO:

    • Use relevant and trustworthy sources
    • Set links to open in a new tab (target="_blank")
    • Use descriptive anchor text (avoid “click here”)
    • Add rel="nofollow ugc" or rel="sponsored" if needed (for ads or affiliate links)
    • Use a plugin like Rank Math or Yoast SEO to manage link attributes easily

    Hope that helps!
