How to password protect entire site?

I feel live I’ve ready everything out there and cannot figure out how to password protect my whole site. I do not want to protect individual posts – I want people to be able to log in and then scroll nicely down the main page, filled with photos and text, without having to log in separate for each post. I don’t want them to have to register for a wordpress.com account and me approve them. I have 100 people who like to just be able to click over to my blog and read it, and none of them will jump through the hoops of having to register for a wordpress.com account first. How do I accomplish this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Well, I’m afraid you’re out of luck.

You can set your blog to Private and Invite people, who will then have to register an account at WP.com to sign in and read your blog OR you can password protect each post, but you can’t password protect the blog.

Why was it designed like this? It seems so easy to just program in an option to password protect the whole site. Smugmug has it. It just doesn’t make sense to me…

Because if you’re concerned enough about security to protect your entire post, you need something more secure than a password. You can do it on an independent WordPress.ORG install if you want.

Why would I need something more secure than a password? It’s not like I’m trying to deter bank thieves or something. I’m just trying to keep pedophiles from happening upon cute photos of my baby. A password should cut it, yes?

No. Oh god no. I’m in the process of writing a series of articles about the ways Anonymous tries to fight online pedophiles. You definitely want something more secure if you don’t want your pictures to get into the wrong hands.

I talked to one mommyblogger who only posts pictures of her kids from the back or wearing masks. The kids love making the masks. That seems smart to me.
