How to password protect our blog?

Hi. We want to make this blog inaccessible to the public by password protecting it. I saw that to do this I need to go to Settings –> reading and access the privacy controls, but this option does not show up in my dashboard. Please help. Thanks!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You cannot password protect a blog. You can password protect post and pages in a blog. Provided you are logged in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered a blog you can make a whole blog private under your site viability settings.

To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/

You can have either a public or a private blog and there is no limitation on the total number of contributors to any blog. If you’d like to invite others to publish posts or help approve comments on your blog, you can invite them to be a Contributor, Editor, or Author. If you want users to receive updates each time you publish new content you can invite them to be a follower/viewer.

    See here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/ and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

The person will have to register a username account but does not need to register a blog. They will need to click the “Accept Invitation” button in the invitation email. If they are logged into their WordPress.com account, they will be taken directly to your blog. If not, they will be taken to the log-in screen, where they can either log in or create a new user account.

Note that users who create a new WordPress.com account at that point will still need to return to the invitation email and click the “Accept Invitation” button after doing so.

Hello, yes this functionality is available when you edit the post (not quick edit, but a full edit)

On the right, click the Edit link next to the Visibility label (it also has the icon of an eye)

Then select Password protected. Note that you need to be an administrator, Editor or the posts’s author to change the visibility settings.

    Best of luck.

I don’t think there is a way to password protect an entire WordPress.COM site, you can only do that post by post. What you can do is set the site to “Private,” then you can invite readers to view the site.

Dashboard > Settings > Reading > Site Visibility: I would like my site to be private, visible only to myself and users I choose

You can invite as many people as you want, but you can only send out 10 invitations at a time.

Thanks @timethief. It’s nice to see that I at least got the answer right. Good to see you here.

Yours is a relevant and helpful comment because it contains the 10 invitation limitation note that I did not cover. :)

There is no maximum total number of users, however, the limit is 10 invitations at any point in time. It’s a spammer prevention limit. So we simply wait and then send out 10 more invitations.

    [off-topic] It’s good to see you here … :)

I am slowly making my way out of here as I have committed the time I used to commit to blogging to my music now. After 10 years of blogging and over 8 years of answering questions here I need to move on. It’s seems unbelievable but I am the Volunteer who has answered the most support questions here. I have answered 3,843 pages of threads with 30 threads on each one. I predate all support Staff even being on Staff except one and I predate the support docs too. Life is short and I almost lost mine this summer (technically I died and they revived me.) However, I have tagged thousands (no I’m not kidding) of support threads and anyone who uses tag search will be able to find answers in the searchbox. [/off-topic]

[off-topic]I have appreciated all your help to my inquiries and have learned a great deal from you blog. I know if there is an issue you’ve probably already addressed it with someone else, or know who to point me to for further assistance.

WordPress staff and bloggers have been lucky to have you on the forums. I hope you won’t be a complete stranger. Good luck with your music. [/off-topic]
