The FAQs makes it clear that it’s not allowed. http://faq.wordpress.com/2005/12/08/adsense/

You have 2 options if no having “adsense” is a dealbreaker for you.
(1) You can hire a web host very inexpensively and download free software from http://wordpress.org and run all the ads you wish

oops! here’s the link again http://wordpress.com/features/
Will you please mark this thread resolved. You will find the option to do that in your original post.
Cheers -
I’m laughing at myself timethief. I’ve never noticed the option in my original post, to mark the thread “resolved” and so never did that with any of my posts. I’ve gone back and marked the ones I’ve started… exept the thank you posts. I wouldn’t want anyone to think they should stop saying thank you. ;-)

@fracas
I’m glad you learned something useful that you didn’t know before. I’m thanking you for your reply because when I’ve told people this “resolved” option existed in the past, there were “forum lurkers,” who alleged that the adsense issue had not really been dealt with and, further alleged that I was only telling people how to use the “resolved” option as a means of shutting them up. ;-)
