how to position my replies to comments, to go next to the person commenting
-
when people comment on my blog entry, I have trouble trying to make my replies to their comments fit below theirs. My replies right now just sort of float on top of all the comments, and don’t dovetail in with each commentator. (hard to find the right words to describe what’s happening–but I hope you understand).

Hi there. In the dashboard, look for Settings ->Discussion. There should be an option for nested comments. If you enable that, your replies, provided you post them by clicking the Reply button on a comment rather than composing a reply in the main comment box, will appear below the original comment and indented (the degree of indentation varies from theme to theme). https://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/discussion-settings/#other-comment-settings
I don’t think displaying comments side-by-side is possible, not even by editing CSS, but you can ask in the CSS Customization forum for a definite answer on that: https://en.forums.wordpress.com/forum/css-customization#postform
Note that you’ll only be able to edit CSS if you have the Premium or Business upgrade: http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/
