How to post larger images in "Twenty Ten"?

  • Unknown's avatar

I am using the theme Twenty Ten. I would like to be able to post my photos in a larger size. I tried changing the image size settings under Media Settings, to no avail. Suggestions? Is the image size limited in this theme? If so, suggestions for a clean, streamlined theme that allows for larger images?
    Thanks!

First, can we have a link to the site you are talking about so that we can see how you are now doing things?

The maximum image width is determined by the width of the post or page content area. You cannot insert an image wider than that or it will either look really bad, or in some themes, actually break them.

If you want wider images, you will either have to change to a theme with a wider content area which Panos was kind enough to cover in this post of his, or you would have to get the Custom Design Upgrade and then modify the CSS to use larger images.

One thing to always keep in mind is that a good number of people (over 20%) are still using monitors that are only 1024px wide, so you typically want to keep the overall width of a theme at 990px or less, otherwise people have to scroll horizontally to see everything and that is one of the top things that people dislike on the web.

    Thanks, thesacredpath.
I meant to include link to my site, here it is: http://www.eatartword.wordpress.com

I understand the concept of being constrained by the content area – what I don’t understand is that my images do not fill that area (in other words, there seems to be plenty of space for them to go bigger).

    My media settings are currently – medium: 300 width / 300 height; large: 1024 w. x 1024 h. (i tried changing that to 420 w. x 313 h. to no avail).

Thanks for link to Panos’s post, I will read it now.

The miximum displayed imahe width for your theme is found here > http://wpbtips.wordpress.com/2009/07/23/maximum-image-width/
    Twenty Ten 585 pixels.

Yikes! I’m so sorry. I typed the wrong width above Twenty Ten – 640 pixels.

Thanks, timethief! The problem is, I can’t seem to set it to allow me to post as big as 640.

Update: after some tinkering, I just figured out I can increase the size by going into Advanced Settings and manually editing the width and height. Very glad! But I’d still like to be able to change the settings to do this automatically.

    Does this help?

Image sizes allows you to change the maximum dimensions of images that are displayed on posts and pages. When setting a thumnail size, the image will be cropped and resized to the setting. Medium and large images will keep the dimension proportions, taking the maximum width and height into account.

Some of the previous settings for defaults have been removed. WordPress will now save the state of those settings from the last time you used them. For example, if you last inserted a full size image, that option will be set the next time you insert an image. http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/media-settings/

The content area of Twenty Ten is 640px wide. The images cannot be over that unless you edit the CSS and make things wider. The white space to the left and right of the content is part of the design.

Thank you, both, for your follow-ups.

@timethief: yes and no. While I figured out how to manually change the size of one photo at a time under advanced editing, I can’t get it to stick in media settings.

@sacredpath: thanks, I realize the white area along the sides is part of the theme. What I meant was that I can’t increase the setting to 640, though I can edit it manually.

Also, though I figured out HOW to increase the size manually, I am experiencing a compromise of the image quality. I just posted an image that I increased by 20% manually and it is starting to lose quality. I had optimized this image before uploading – it started out as 4.1 MB, when I uploaded it into web based image editing site it became 83.33 KB and then it optimized down to 28.08 KB.

The first centered image in Kale Frittata was uploaded at only 360px x 270px. You can’t make that into a 640px wide image without it turning into fuzz. You have to upload images that are at least 640px wide to begin with to be able to insert them at that size.

The Dots original image is only 307px wide. Again, same thing.

If you don’t insert an image that is at least 640px wide, and then you use the scale thing in the advanced tab, image quality will suffer because all you are doing to telling the browser to resize the image you are simply telling it to add random pixels where it wants to make the image bigger and browsers don’t do that well.

Upload images that are at least as wide as the maximum available content area on your theme.
