How to post shorter posts (don’t know how to ask this!)

Hello,
I’m new to blogging!
I don’t even know how to ask this, but here it goes.
My posts will be long, and I don’t want all of the post to go on the main page. I would like to have a link that says “read the rest of the story”, where the user can then click on and read the rest of the post.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

You can click the <!–more–> tag and write what you want after that to be shown after the jump. But last I heard, whatever is after that tag does not show up on the RSS feeds.

Just tried it… works great! Thanks. I’m not going to worry about the RSS feeds for now though.

Is there a way to only put part of a post inside (i.e., the middle of a post), instead of the entire part after the “more” tag? Or have multiple cuts?

You mean like how I did above? Put the tags:
< blockquote> </ blockquote >
Those tags can be found on the menu when you are about to make a post under b-quote.

<!–nextpage–> This is a wordpress tag similar to the <!–more–> tag, except that the codex says it can be used any number of times in a post and each will insert a “break” and paginate the post in that location.For more information click the documentation link at the bottom of the forum. It will take you to the codex. Search there for “quicktags”.

Ok. Let’s see if this makes any more sense: Is it possible to hide part of one’s entry, but not necessarily the last part, behind a link that, if clicked on, reveals the entire post? It’s similar to the <!–more–> function, I think, but can be used more than once in a single entry or can be used to hide only a part of the post, not everything under the <!–more–> tag. It’s not a pressing issue or anything like that, I was just wondering if that feature was available. Thanks again :-).

No, it’s not the same because I don’t want the entire last half of the post “inside” after the <!–more–> tag… Um, I think livejournal has this feature where one is able to make multiple cuts in one post, like this person does: http://musesfool.livejournal.com/ – does that make it more clear? Just wondering if it’s something that’s commonly done. I don’t think I saw it in the chart, from the above link.

Did you actually try to use <!–nextpage–> and find that it didn’t work?
If that’s the case, then I suggest you use the feedback button on the top right hand corner of any of your blog pages to a contact staff. Be sure to include a link back to this thread because it’s now obvious that none of the volunteers who are available can help you with this. -
I did try the nextpage tag and all it does is create more pages, which is not quite what I was going for. I think perhaps the function I’m looking for doesn’t work here, but it is not a big deal. Thanks for your help, in any case; it’s greatly appreciated :-).

I tried the <!–nextpage–> tag to see what it would look like. I think it’s pretty neat. Essentially multiple tags break text into sections so that each section has a discrete page of its own. You can navigate by clicking on the pages numbers (i.e. Pages 1 2 3 4) at the bottom of post section.
I did encounter one problem. If you edit the post then do a “save and view”, the post appears as described above. However when you “view site”, only the text prior to the first <!–nextpage–> tag appears and there is no way to page to the remaining sections of text. There are no page numbers
Has anybody else had to deal with this problem? Thanks.

yeap thanks, the nextpage tag is heavily used in my pages at my other blog which uses the wp-mu, works perfectly.
