How to preserve image quality and original size
-
I can’t seem to get my featured image to look correct at 100%. It was designed at 72dpi at exactly the specified content width By default Alto resizes it to fit the entire content width and removes side bar widgets and it is pixeleted. What can be done?
Heres how shoddy it looks: http://pedestrian7.wordpress.com/products/?preview=true
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
The Alto theme does not have sidebars on pages by design (you can see this on their demo page right here: http://altodemo.wordpress.com/about/ ). So if you are uploading an image which you intend to fill the entire screen, you will want to take that in to account. You may also want to use a higher resolution, as 72 does not allow much room for error.

Hi there,
Many thanks for your advice – it makes sense now :)
I was wondering what e you would suggest to allow room for error?
Why do I see the widgets sidebar on preview?
I was wondering what if you didn’t want the image to fill the entire screen – is there a away of controlling image of a narrower width?

Hiya,
The preview which I viewed did not show any sidebars in Alto for pages. For posts it did, but not for pages.
The dpi which you want to use is going to be up to your discretion and you’ll likely find the best resolution after some experimentation. 300 dpi is the barest minimum resolution for photo printing. 72 dpi is the barest resolution for web display. Somewhere in between is what you might want to consider for something pleasing.
The best way for you to add any image to a page or post is going to be via the Add Media button rather than the featured image. This will allow you to control the size of the image in the post/page as well as several other features:

Hi there
Many thanks for your assistance – its made things a lot clearer although there are a few problems
I need to be able to control the exact size of the infographics images as I would like the text in them to match the caption size of the Proxima Nova typeface I chose in Alto.
This type of image, which is not photographic must be seen at 100% else the type featured in the image will not be legibile and it has to almost appear “inline” and professional.
1)Right now the image is :
a) not left aligned as I edited ( the page title is left aligned but the image looks indented).
b) not at 100% and at full size has been scaled down.
c) has a caption which is too far away
2) Also this page needs a lead-in ie. title plus body explanatory text before we hit the infographic. Is this possible?
3) I also need ton insert a custom logo in place of the blog title (eg “Alto’) Is this possible?
Terribly sorry for being so particular but I guess being a digital designer who works with F/E devs I assume standard digital layouts are possible in order to achieve the minimum degree of professionalism.
Should I opt for a better template or get a CSS guru to hack it?Best
Andy ;)

The image, regardless of resizing and upping the res is still blurry inspite of the original being sharp
This seems to be a recurring problem with wordpress from my investigation.
How do I get it sharper?

Hi there,
Given your requirements for complete control over the image and how it displays, you may want to consider going with traditional web hosting. The WYSIWYG nature of our inputs is always going to modify slightly how your images are rendered and the resulting output. If you are very concerned with matching up text sizes which are pre-printed on an image with fonts being rendered live on the web, then WordPress.com will be a continual source of frustration to you.
Additionally, I couldn’t help but notice that some of the pages which you have already created appear to indicate that you are planning on building a catalog of products of some sort. We don’t really allow direct e-commerce on our sites at this time. If that was a part of your plan for your site I have to again suggest you look in to alternatives rather than face suspension of your site after all of your hard work!

Hi there,
Many thanks for your advice again :)
If I were to go down a traditional web hosting what would be the best, easiest, alternative? Will the addition of web hosting enable plugins that can override the WYSIWYG input? Apologies for the silly questions.
While this is still a blog, and a mens fashion blog it is a new, fresh approach with a focus on yes – design principles rather than the “self”. The images document silhouettes that exist and there is no selling of any products only featuring purchased products and analysing their design strengths in the process of building a modern, sustainable wardrobe in the Asian Century. It feels like its in the third person as I endeavour to challenge exisitng modes of communication apparent in fashion blogs which are self indulgent. None of these concepts are ecommerce with the exception of banners linking to high end retailers.

Hi there,
I have consulted my colleagues and found a solution.
They agree with WordPress being frustrating for my endeaviurs so is it possible to opt for a refund?
Best
Andy :)

Hi Andy,
I’m glad you were able to find a solution, and I’m sorry WordPress.com didn’t work out for your needs. The concept for your blog sounds very interesting — I wish you all the best with it!
I went ahead and cancelled your remaining Custom Design upgrade and issued a full refund for that. If there’s anything more I can do to help, please let me know. :)
