How to prevent Follower notifcation of a scheduled post until it's publish?

My site’s Followers are receiving notifications of Scheduled new posts BEFORE the date that the post is scheduled to be published. This defeats the purpose of setting a scheduled date!
The Followers only receive an error 404 message when they try to open the ‘new’ post … which just prompts them to contact me and ask. I don’t want to discourage them! So how can I (or WordPress) set the Follow rules to only notify Followers when a post is ACTUALLY published?

If you’re using the new Beep Beep Boop editor to create posts, try switching to the classic editor. It’s what I use, I schedule posts every day, and I have no complaints from users.

I really do not want to start

      trying

solutions that could only result in more notifications going out to Followers if they have no affect.
And on the face of it, I do not see why using either the new or original editors should make a difference.

Thank you raincaster, and any others pondering my ‘problem’.
I think I have found the cause. One of my co-editors now thinks that in error or without realising the significance, that he ‘Published Now’ the rogue post before resetting the published date to a later, Scheduled, date.

Thanks for letting us know the cause of the mystery.

If it happens again with out human help, please let us know!
