How to publish posts and pages

  • Unknown's avatar

This may seem ignorant, but I do not see how to publish my posts nor my pages. I have created them through the dashboard and only have the option to preview or save. The post/page exists in the dashboard, but only as a draft. There is no publish button. I signed up for the free wordpress.com domain and received the original login email. There should not be a problem. But when I go to my site, and don’t see any posts, nor the image I uploaded for my profile. Help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Do you see User menu on your admin page?
If so, check your user role. http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/

Unfortunately I seem to need more hand holding. I changed to administrator role in the Users section. Then, when I go to my posts, from the dashboard, I still see only drafts and no ability to publish. This is not terribly intuitive for me.

To locate draft posts go to Dashboard > Posts > All Post > Drafts
    http://swingdoorclanks.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_status=draft&post_type=post
Hover over the post title and click the Edit link.
    For editing see:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/

Provided you did not create the post in the new Beep Beep Boop editor where it’s saved only on your browser, and is not auto-saved to the servers for your blog I can help you with this.

If the post was created on the dashboard of your own blog at Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New then you ought to be able to recover a lost post or page from revisions if needs be.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-revisions/
See also if applicable > restoring from trash http://en.support.wordpress.com/trash/#restoring-from-trash

(If you are referring to a Page then see here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/page-revisions/)

    I recommend:

    1. Always create your posts on the dashboard of your own blog at
    2. Dashboard > Posts > All Posts > Add New
    3. Immediately after creating a post and entering a title click the save draft link. Thereafter, “click save draft” frequently.
    4. Always allow pages to fully load before clicking any other links.
    5. Never leave a post or page open for content creation or editing and walk away from it, or open another tab in the same blog and work on something else while it is still open. Save it properly and return to edit it later.
    6. Use an offline blog editor so you have backups on your own computer http://en.support.wordpress.com/xml-rpc/

If you cannot locate a revision or restore from Trash then the content has been lost and cannot be recovered.

By default the front page of the blog is the only page that will display all published posts on it. In a new blog there will be a front page error message bit as soon as you publish a post not a page the error message will be gone. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/

On the bottom of your Admin page you will find a link to the step by step Learn WordPress.com blogging Tutorial prepared by Staff. http://learn.wordpress.com/

See also the “Video Quick Start” tutorial http://en.support.wordpress.com/video-quick-start/

The support documentation is all found at the Support link http://en.support.wordpress.com which is also on the bottom of your Admin page.

The problem remains that there is no way for me to publish my posts. There is no publish button/link, whatever you want to call it. I can view my draft, save my draft, review my draft. I cannot publish. I’ve read the tutorial. It sounds quite easy to post. But I’m missing some elemental step.

When there is no button then you could have a browser related issue.

    1. If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

    2. If you are using an IE browser in compatibility mode please disable that mode. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/use-compatibility-view

    3. If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/

    (a) Try clearing your browser’s cache http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

If applicable see here for instructions on how to clear the cache for Chrome and Safari on the iPad:
    http://browsers.about.com/od/howtousemobilebrowser1/ss/safari-ipad-clear-cache.htm
    http://browsers.about.com/od/howtousemobilebrowser1/ss/How-To-Clear-Browsing-Data-In-Chrome-For-Ipad_6.htm

    (b) Make sure that you have both third-party cookies enabled and JavaScript enabled
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/third-party-cookies/
    http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654

    (c) Disable all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily.

    (d) Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

Add both *.wordpress.com and *.wp.com to your list of trusted sites under the Security tab. Make sure to uncheck the box for “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.” http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/#frequently-asked-questions

    4. You can use this link to see if your flash is up to date. http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ If it’s not then go to http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/ and download and install the latest version of flash.

    5. Try using another browser.

    6. If you are not successful let us know:
    (a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.
    (b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://supportdetails.com/
    (c) Exactly what you experience including what any error reports you receive state.
    (d) Posting a screenshot can also be helpful. http://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot You can use http://snag.gy/ to share screenshots. Or you can use the WordPress.com guide I linked to and upload it to your Media Library, and return to this thread to provide the file name so Staff can examine it.

Thank you, everyone, for your help. The issue was simple: even though I received confirmation link and went to it, my account was never confirmed. Now it is and I can publish.

But I have a new issue, possibly related to the theme I chose. I chose the Writr theme. The front page is the latest post. I have also created a number of pages, but I cannot see them listed anywhere on the page. I have tried setting a parent, in this case the About page which was provided by default, but this does not help. In fact, I do not see the About page anywhere. I can update/publish the page, and then I see it. But for a visitor, there is no way to get to the pages.

Since setting pages is an option with my theme, and it’s pretty self explanatory how to publish them, why can’t I see them anywhere on the front? Any advice? Very much appreciated…slowly becoming more blog-literate.

You need to use the Pages widget or a theme with a tabbed header in order for your pages to be visible.

    Hi there,

You can also set up a Custom Menu (under Appearance > Menus in your site’s dashboard) and assign it to the Primary Menu location. The Writr theme displays your primary custom menu in the sidebar. :)

Thanks. I’m moving along now. My site is designed for a writers’ circle I’ve created. I’ve got 6 students in the group and I’ve given them each a page on the site. I’ve added them as users/contributors. So my question now:

After they accept invitation, what are the steps for them to make posts to their page on the site? Will they have a login prompt? Are there any other settings I have to make on my end as administrator?

    Thanks very much.

  • Unknown's avatar

Once someone is added as a user on a site, they will log in with their WordPress.com account details and will then be able to access the site and contribute to it. However, contributors on a site can’t make changes to static pages that someone else (like you) created.

Instead, I’d recommend setting up Category Pages instead of static pages. That way, each writer can create new posts in the post editor, and if they each have a category specific to them they can add that category to their posts. That way, their published posts will automatically appear on their specific category page.

  • Unknown's avatar

Thanks! I’m getting more familiar with Category Pages. One followup question:

Following the above method, contributors’ posts will appear on my front page as well as in their category page. If I only want contributor posts to appear in their page, then I can setup a Static Front Page. However, I prefer that my front page not be static. What I’d like to do is have my general site posts appear as the front page, while contributor posts appear only in their page. Perhaps this is too website-like and not possible with my theme.

    Let me know, many thanks.

This isn’t actually possible with WordPress.com sites. Each site at WordPress.com has a single blog — if your front page is set up to show your blog’s recent posts, it will always show all of your posts (including contributor posts).

One alternative is to ask each of your contributors to set up their own WordPress.com blogs, separate from your site. Then, you can link to each of their separate blogs in your site’s sidebar. That way, their posts are completely separate from the general site posts that appear on your site, but you can still click to go directly to each of their blogs.

Thanks. I see. So, I have one more question regarding changing my Sidebar (Appearance/Widgets). I have given a title to my Pages (Meet the Writers) and I am trying to exclude some pages from appearing under this heading. It say that I should use the Page ID, separated by commas. I have tried using the Page shortlink address and regular address, as well as the Page title, but nothing seems to work. What exactly is the Page ID and where do I find it?

  • Unknown's avatar

Ah, good question! The page ID is used to identify each page on your site, separately from the permalink to your page. You can find it by going to Pages > All Pages in your site’s dashboard, and clicking the Edit link for a page. When you’re in the page editor, the URL in your browser’s address bar will show a number — that’s the page ID.

We have more about how to find a page ID with an example, or you can also find that information on the Pages Widget support page.

Let me know if you have any trouble finding those page IDs and I can give you a hand with it.
