How to publish without notifying subscribers #2

Hi everyone, I’d like to insert some posts and pages in my blog without notifying subscribers. Browsing the wordpress forum I found this discussion:

The short answer is you cannot publish a new post without it appearing in your RSS Feed for entries (posts). We cannot set the number of posts appearing in our RSS feeds here > Settings > Reading to less than 1 post. However, you can edit an existing post or page using the instructions that raincoaster provided at the link you posted.

One thought I just had, and I have no idea if it will work, would be to set the blog to private, publish those posts you do not want going out, and when done set the blog back to public. As I said, I don’t know if this will work or not. I’ve never tried it.

G’day TT, yeah it’s just a thought. I’ve never tried it so I don’t know if it would work or not. I would do a test, but I’m too lazy today.

@TSP: While you wrote your latest response, I was trying out your solution and YES it seems to work, as long as the subscriber is not an admin (or the like).
To test this, I used a spare blog I have and I subscribed both as myself (with my existing username) AND as a non-WP.com user (with an alternate email address I have).
When publishing a post while the blog was “private”, only my username’s email address was advised.
When publishing another post while the blog was “search engines blocked”, both my username’s email and the alternate email were notified.
Now, in your opinion, would this have any impact on search engine rankings? (to have a blog private for a minute or two?)

No, the search engines would not have an issue when it only happens for a short period. It it was weeks or months, then they would end up dropping it from their indexes, but not just for a half hour or so
So, the solution is, set it to private, publish the posts you do not want going out to subscribers, then make it public again.

I have a related question: Do my subscribers get a notification message whenever I modify a post? I don’t want that happening, but I do want to be able to go back and correct typos if need be.

Never mind my question just there. I found the answer on another forum: it indicated that subscribers only get notified on the original post. If that’s incorrect, please let me know!

Every time you edit a post, the RSS feed changes to reflect the edit. The feed is dynamic.
