How to purchase and site and not pay $13/year for mapping

  • Unknown's avatar

I’ve already paid for DNS and can make the changes and additions myself. I’m on a limited budget, so how do I keep from paying the additional $13/year for mapping when I don’t want or need it? Thanks

There is no free domain mapping so be clear on that.

    re: mapping an existing domain

WordPress.com provides free blogs and hosts them free of charge. There are no bandwidth charges. All WordPress.com blogs come with 3000 megabytes (~3 GBs) of space for storing uploaded files and images. Free features are listed here https://en.wordpress.com/features/

See here for details of all 3 plans http://store.wordpress.com/bundles/ offered by WordPress.com.
    Premium bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/premium/
    Business bundle details http://store.wordpress.com/plans/business/

Note that each upgrade bundle applies to a single blog only and is for a single year only when it is due to be renewed.

We all pay in full for every upgrade at the time of purchase. Make sure you read the comparison very closely so you know exactly what the restrictions and limitations on WordPress.COM blogging are: http://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

Read Important Notes Before Upgrading http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#important-notes-before-upgrading

WordPress.com does not accept domain transfers but mapping an existing domain is possible. Domain mapping of an existing domain URL that you already own and purchased elsewhere is not done free of charge. You will have to renew the domain name purchase where you made it and the domain mapping purchase here every year.

Mapping an existing domain costs $13. annually and a domain name purchase and domain mapping are included in the Premium upgrade bundle.

In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com sub-domain blog to map from and it does not matter what that underlying .wordpress.com URL is. It does not have to match the domain URL.

If you have registered a .wordpress.com blog you log in as Admin under the exact same username account that registered the WordPress.COM blog, and as you own a domain URL already, you can see here for mapping an existing domain. http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

It can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

After poking around the web site, I’m not quite sure what to expect. I have to pay $18 for using my own domain, $13 for the mapping, and $50 for email. Does this have ads on the website? Or do I have to purchase another option for $99 to not have adds? Do I still have the $13 mapping charge?

  • Unknown's avatar

The $18 includes a both a domain URL and domain mapping purchase. This thread is tagged for Staff assistance. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

To expand a bit on what @TT has posted above

To just map your existing domain name to a blog here is $13.-/yr – that changes the URL of your blog here to that of your custom domain name

If you want email to match your custom domain name you have several options, some are no cost others cost

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/email-forwarding/

    Add Email to Your Domain

If you don’t like the ads that WordPress.COM runs on your site to offset some of the costs to provide you with a “free” blog – you would need the No Ads Upgrade – that is included in the $99.-/yr upgrade – but that upgrade also includes the Domain Mapping so the cost is still $99.-/yr for both Domain Mapping and No Ads

    hope this helps a bit

    @auxclass
Thanks for the assist. Hope you have a great week. The smoke from wild fires here is so bad that I have asthma issues.

  • Unknown's avatar

Glad I could help a bit

    Sorry about the asthma –

I saw on the news this morning that the smoke from the Canadian fires was so bad at Port Angeles (on the US side of the Straights of Juan de Fuca) is so bad that people jammed the 911 emergency lines –

    Take care

    @auxclass
Hubby and all other elected local government politicians are trying to quell the rising fear. We are terrified that a forest fire may start here because the whole island will go down if it does. For 53 years the Martin Mars water bombers patrolled B.C.’s skies in the summer, dumping water on wildfires throughout the province when the call came. In 2013 the Martin MARS water bombers were not contracted by this !@$%!@% provincial gov’t, and the coast guard stations have been reduced in number too. Our reality is that the ferry cannot be used to evacuate all 4,000 of us as foot passengers in one go.

Please forgive me for posting off-topic into this thread.

@TT – just talking to a friend that has links in Canada – and one of the problems with the Martin Mars bombers is the water level is so low in some of the lakes that they are afraid to take the bombers into the lakes for fear of hitting snags and such – but there seems to be some smaller bombers on the way out to somewhere in “BC”

You have received accurate info on this thread. Auxclass’s “To expand a bit on what @TT has posted above ” is probably the most direct answer to your question.

  • @auxclass/timethief

As I may have mentioned, I live in between the two of you (given that this is a public forum, I won’t state exactly where).

The whole town has been filled with smoke for the past few days. TT’s fear is the more serious one though. Ours is just an inconvenience. Stay safe up there.

The east side of the state has major fire problems in the forest. They had dozens of fires in the greater metropolitan area around the sound the last few days. Everything is dry and the lakes are at record lows –
