How to redirect blog from wp.com to Jekyll on GitHub?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have set up a blog using Jekyll at GitHub and now I want to redirect my current domain name at wp.com to this new site. I have purchased the site redirect upgrade from wp.com, I have set the CNAME record in the repository and I have tried to update the DNS record at wp.com. Alas, I am ending up with a redirect loop error and the new site will not load. I suspect the error is in the wp.com DNS record. I would really appreciate if someone enlighten me as to how this record should look for a GitHub hosted Jekyll site?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi there,

Since your domain mpkanalytics.com is registered here at WordPress.com, you don’t actually need the site redirect upgrade. All you need is to update your DNS to point to GitHub.

I went ahead and disabled your current site redirect. You can cancel this upgrade for a full refund from Store > My Upgrades in your dashboard. Please let me know if you would like any help with this.

In most cases, you can use this guide to use your domain with another web host: Move your domain to another host

Because of how GitHub uses custom domains, however, setting up the DNS is a bit tricky. I went ahead and updated your DNS records here at WordPress.com, so your domain is now pointed to your GitHub site.

Please note that it can take 48-72 hours for domain changes like this to take full effect. If you don’t yet see your site at your domain mpkanalytics.com, you may need to wait a little longer. You can also try flushing your computer’s DNS cache with these instructions:
    http://www.whatsmydns.net/flush-dns.html

Let me know if you have any questions about this!

Thank you for helping me out. In my attempts to get this working I realized this morning that I also broke my email record for mpkanalytics.com. It seems to work again, but I am not sure why or how!? Clearly I have no clue as to what I am actually doing.

As per your instructions I have cancelled the site redirect upgrade. I looked at my DNS record and I am not able to see the changes you did. Chances are that I might have undone your work [sorry :-( ] so you might want to double check that. I will not touch anything and will let you do the magic.

Thanks again, I really appreciate your help.
    Best regards,
    Mario

    Hi Mario,

The custom DNS section for your domain (at the “Edit DNS” link under Store > Domains) only works when you have your domain pointed at WordPress.com. Since you want to use your domain with another host, all additional DNS records need to be added in the domain manager under Domain Administration.

I went ahead and added your Google Apps records to your DNS records in the domain manager, so you should be all set. (Just to let you know, I had to change your domain manager password to do this. If you would like to access your domain manager again, you will need to reset your password.) Please give it a few hours for the changes to propagate.

If you have any other trouble with the domain or email, please let me know! :)

Thanks. This worked…, until today. Out of the blue, it appears that my domain is down. When I query it using network-tools.com I get the following error message:

    Retrieving DNS records for mpkanalytics.com…
    DNS servers
    ns11.domaincontrol.com [216.69.185.6]
    ns12.domaincontrol.com [208.109.255.6]
DNS server returned an error: Query refused

What is going on? This appears to be affecting the email for this domain as well.

Going through the results of the DNS diagnostics at http://www.viewdns.info/dnsreport/?domain=mpkanalytics.com appears to suggest that I am missing a zone file in my DNS configuration. Sifting through wp.com support pages seems to suggest that only the support people at wp.com can set up the zone file https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/create-zonefile?replies=4#post-900032. Also when login into the Domain Manager I get the following message “The zone file is temporarily unavailable. If this problem continues, please contact customer support.” In other words, I suppose I have reached the end of the road of what I am able to do on my own. Could some please help me out with this sooner rather then later.

Hi Mario, I’m very sorry you’ve been having trouble with your domain and email. I contacted our domain registrar partner to resolve this issue for you, and I’ll let you know as soon as I hear back from them. Please let me know if you have any other questions in the meantime.

    Thanks, I am anxiously waiting…

My website and email has now been down for three days! I really need to have this resolved asap (i.e. today!).

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, I’m very sorry for the delay with this. I contacted our domain registrar partner again to try to resolve the issue with your domain’s zone file, and I will check in with them again later today if it isn’t resolved soon.

Still not working on the 4th day.

  • Unknown's avatar

Who is the domain registrar partner?

  • Unknown's avatar

Did you check with them today – what is the status?

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, I have been talking with our domain registrar partner, and we are working on getting the zone record for your domain back up and running. I sincerely apologize for the delay.

Hi there, I just sent you an email about this, but I wanted to post here as well in case the email doesn’t reach you:

I want to apologize again for the issues with your domain mpkanalytics.com. There was a technical issue with the DNS that should be sorted out now.

I had to reset your DNS records in the process, so it may take 2-3 days for the DNS to fully propagate. In the meantime, you may see a message about a parked domain when you visit mpkanalytics.com. I also re-added your email records, so the email for this domain should begin working again, as well.

Again, I’m very sorry for the problems caused by this interruption in service. Please let me know if I can provide any further help.
