How to remove and change name of items in categories

    In my WP the second widget is categories [DANH MUC]
    It has 9 items. What I want to do is:
    1) remove the 9th item Uncategorized (2)
    2) rename the 8th item trang thơ vụn (1) to Thơ Mới Sáng Tác
    3) then move the 8th item Thơ Mới Sáng Tác to the 2nd position listing
    under the 1st item CD Hương Xưa (AiKhanh) (10)

    Hi there,

    I had a hard time doing these things with this widget. However, by using a different approach, I was able to achieve all the things you want to do. Here’s how:

    1 – log into your wp-admin panel https://chungpham.wordpress.com/wp-admin
    2 – first create a new menu. Click on Appearance > Menus. At the top of the screen, you’ll see a small link that says create a new menu. Click it.
    3 – give your new menu a name, and click Create Menu.
    4 – on the left side of the screen, you’ll see a drop down menu with the following items in it: Pages, Posts, Custom links and Categories. Click on Categories to open this tab.
    5 – click on all the categories you want to include in the menu, and then click on Add to menu.
    6 – at this stage, you can rename, delete, add and change the position of the categories easily. You can always come back to this menu editing section. When you’re satisfied, click on Save menu in the bottom right of your screen.
    7 – now we’ll insert the menu. Click on Widgets under the Appearance tab in the main menu to the left in the wp-admin panel.
    8 – you’ll see a widget called Custom menu. Drag this into the area you want it to display in (top right corner of your screen). I dragged it into the area called Main sidebar, but I guess this depends on the theme you’re using.
    9 – give your menu a title (for example DANH MỤC), and from the drop down menu, select the menu you just created (remember the name from step 3?).
    10 – go back to your webpage, refresh the browser. Hopefully this has solved the problem for you. If not, let me know.

    See the Managing Categories in WP Admin section of the Categories support page.

    As jjberg83 suggests, the edits you’ve projected can not be done at the Calypso interface, and must be done in the WP Admin interface. Creating a custom menu and displaying it in a custom menu widget is a valid alternative to displaying the categories widget. However, it unnecessary to do so in order to accomplish the first two tasks you’ve listed.

    1) remove the 9th item Uncategorized (2)

    There must be a default category on a WordPress.com site, and by default the default category is “Uncategorized.” The default category may be changed at the WP Admin Writing Settings page.

    Steps to delete the “Uncategorized” category:
    1. Change the default category to some other category at WP Admin Writing Settings > Default Post Category. You may create another category for this purpose. Your WP Admin Writing Settings page would be https://chungpham.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-writing.php.
    2. Go to your WP Admin Categories page, https://chungpham.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category, and delete the category “Uncategorized.”

    2) rename the 8th item trang thơ vụn (1) to Thơ Mới Sáng Tác

    You may edit or delete any category at your WP Admin Categories page (see link above). Edits to the categories will be automatically reflected in the Categories Widget.

    3) then move the 8th item Thơ Mới Sáng Tác to the 2nd position listing
    under the 1st item CD Hương Xưa (AiKhanh) (10)

    Categories appear in alphanumerical order at the WP Admin Categories page, and in the Categories widget. If it is necessary that the order be changed, then you can build a custom menu and then add a Custom Menu Widget to replace the Categories Widget, as suggested by jjberg83.

    That is, except the category set as the default category. This is why it is necessary to change the default category from “Uncategorized” to another category in order to be able to edit or delete it.
