how to remove items in footer section of pages
-
Hello. My menu list includes: home, about, archives and links. On the home and about pages i want to remove the following items from the footer section: archive, categories, meta and leave only one of the search items there.
Do I do that through the custom design upgrade mentioned in dashboard/appearance/custom design? Or is there another way to do it?
If it is through the upgrade feature then once I make the changes, do I have to keep renewing the upgrade feature each year forever or does it get changed and then it remains even if not renewed?
Thanks
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

No, you just need to put your own widget in the footer:

BTW: If you purchase an upgrade for some other reason, then you will need to renew it each year

1tess – thanks for the prompt responses. I’ll check out the link and let you know how it works. And double thanks for saving me the $30/year-in-and-year-out

You are welcome!
Just add the search bar you want and the other widgets should go away. They will go away for all pages and posts but I assume that is what you wanted? -
1tess, or whomever,

Not quite. I have now figured out how to remove the widgets that I didn’t want on each page. The next step is to add some widgets to the bottom of the some pages and not others.
For example, on my wordpress blog on the bottom of the Home page I only want the search widget. But on the Archives page I want the search, archive, categories and meta widgets. Suggetions?
Thanks

That’s not possible. This is a multiuser blogging platform and every bloig wearing the same theme is using the same underlying template. We cannot edit templates or themes and CSS editing cannot be used to change blog functionality. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/

timethief, Thanks for the clarification and the links, some of which I had not seen before.
The light bulb factor is starting to kick in. I now see, as you point out, that I was confusing adding and deleting widgets with altering an underlying template or theme. The former is possible. The latter is a no-no for wordpress.com themes. So be it.
So next question – if I should put this in a new topic just let me know, but for now I will put it here.
If you go to patrickobrien.wordpress.com and then look at his menu item labeled: Archive, you will see that he has sections labeled Recent Articles, Months, Tags and Categories.
So they are widgets that he is imbedding in the body of the text area and not as I previously saw as just a large footer area. Correct? And if so, how did he do that?
Thanks

This is not about Widgets. Widgets can be used only in sidebars and other arease specifically for widgets. They cannot be used to populate pages or posts. So the answer is no he did not embed Widgets in the top menu bar. He created a custom menu and added items to it. Staff have provided help for those who want to structure their blog like a website. > http://en.support.wordpress.com/using-wordpress-to-create-a-website/
What’s critical is:
(1) a clear comprehension of the differences between pages and posts > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
(2) a clear comprehension of the fact that there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page. But we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page. We organize our posts by assigning Categories to them. When we publish a post it automatically appears on the running page for posts and also on the Categories pages and Archives pages. Note: There must be one published post in each Category in order for there to be anything to display.A custom menu allows you to display Categories with drop-downs to sub-categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation where normally only Pages tabs are displayed. If you wish you can also include Pages with drop-downs to sub-pages and/or custom links in your custom menu as well. You are in charge of what appears in a custom menu. You choose the order in which to display any and/or all the foregoing in your custom menu. You choose which to display and which to hide.

timethief, Thanks again for the clarifications and links.
The light bulb factor is shifting for me from 25 to 35 and may now be at about 45 watts. Good progression for me.
I will need to explore these links further, starting with creating a custom menu, and then will circle back to this forum item probably in a few day.
Go Pats!
