    Howdy,

The domain expiration process takes about 80 days and goes through a variety of steps. While in this purgatory the registrar enforces an $80 late fee in addition to the normal $18 renewal fee. This is, however, the best chance you have of retaining the domain at this point. As long as no one else has bid on it you’ll have it renewed for another year. If someone else has bid on it you’ll get a refund.

If the domain has not been bid on by someone else at the end of the expiration process it gets released back into the pool of available domains. You can try to purchase it at this time for the normal $18, however be aware it’s quite possible someone else could purchase it before you do and you’ll have no recourse to get it back other than approaching the new owner with an offer (which could likely cost more than the $98).

For more details on the process and steps WordPress.com recommends check this page here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/.

Whatever you decide to do, be it try to retain this domain or get a new one, it is generally a best practice to set up auto-renewal to ensure the domain doesn’t expire. After all the $18 for a year you may not need is much less harmful than $98 for a year you do need, and WordPress sends multiple emails running up to the renewal date to allow for you to cancel if you’d like to. For more details on that see here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/my-upgrades/#auto-renew

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

    Hello,

Thank you very much for your answer!
So if I understand well (sorry I’m french) I have to wait 80 days (my account expired beginning of August so I assume I will have to wait till beginning of November) to buy again my domain name if it is accessible. As I already paid 18$ I will have to pay 80$ more right?

But there is something I still don’t understand. I have to pay for a specific domain address that’s okay, but how come my wordpress address autumnfancy.wordpress is not accessible neither? Normally it should be free with an indefinite access, no?

Thank you very much for your answer, I’m looking forward to hear from you ;)

So if I understand well (sorry I’m french) I have to wait 80 days

Almost but not quite. The two options you have are:

    1) Submit a request for $98 now (you don’t have to wait until the expiration period ends) to renew your domain. There is a solid chance this will work and you will get to keep your domain. There is still a chance though that someone else will have bid on your domain, in which case the renewal will fail and you’ll get a refund. This is the redemption period.

    2) Wait until the domain is put up for sale again (after the 80 days). The advantage to this is that you can attempt to avoid the $80 late fee and just pay $18 to buy it again (since you won’t be renewing then you’ll be buying it as you did the first time). The disadvantage is you won’t know exactly when it goes up for sale, and since anyone can buy it someone may get there and buy it before you do. This happens when the domain is released.

The main choice you want to make is whether the domain autumnfancy.com is worth $80 to you. If it is, you should go ahead and submit a request right now to attempt a late renewal. If it isn’t, you can take your chances and wait for it to be released before trying to purchase again.

But there is something I still don’t understand. I have to pay for a specific domain address that’s okay, but how come my wordpress address autumnfancy.wordpress is not accessible neither? Normally it should be free with an indefinite access, no?

You are correct that is free with indefinite access. I’m able to access your site fine through that address. It should be set as your primary domain until you get things sorted with the other domain. See the instructions here for more details with that: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/#setting-the-primary-domain

Hope this helps clarify things! I’ll go ahead and tag this thread for staff assistance so they can assist if you’d like to submit a request for late renewal now and/or are having difficulties with your autumnfancy.wordpress.com domain. Be sure to reply here to confirm whether you’d like to try the late renewal, what errors you’re seeing with autumnfancy.wordpress.com, or if anything else still seems unclear.

    Happy blogging!

  • It looks like my colleague helped you sort this out.

Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

Thank you very much for all these precisions I think then I’ll wait for the end of the redemtion period and try to avoid to pay the 80$ late fee.
    My wordpress address works again!

    Many thanks again,

    Alexandra.

  • Understood. Best of luck.
