How to require "Followers" to include their email address
-
Just sent out several invitations by email for people to follow our site. One person got back to me right away but did not include an email. He is now listed under “Followers” but not “Email Followers”. I know his email so this is not a problem for this person but others can follow us without their email, giving me no way to contact them if I need to.
Is there a way to require someone to include their email when they follow us?

Hello there,
Is there a way to require someone to include their email when they follow us?
Logged in WordPressdotcom followers can follow your site through the Action bar or directly in the Reader. There is no obligation on their part to provide you with an email address in order to follow your site.
Having said that, you can use a contact form to collect email addresses of members of your organization or subscribers but you should clearly indicate that you are using the contact form for that purpose. Submitting information through the contact form does not automatically subscribe them to your site. They will still have to subscribe to your site in some manner.
Do be aware that emailing followers directly without their explicit permission to do so may involve legal issues depending on the laws of your country.

OK, thanks. We are the Maine chapter of a national organization and one of our goals is to reach out to potential members.

Can you tell me what the laws are in the US?

Sorry for the late reply. As I am not a lawyer, I cannot dispense legal advice. You should search for the FTC ruling on CAN-SPAM and whether there are laws specific to Maine.
