how to resize photos on my Media Library

  • Unknown's avatar

I have thousands of photos that are very large in my media library, and now I’ve run out of space. Is it possible to easily re-size a lot of photos that are already posted? ie a batch process? I know that I need to buy more space, but is it possible to quickly re-size the existing pics?

PS, why doesn’t WordPress send out an email when my Media Library is full? Or better yet, an email when it is at 90% of full?

    thanks!

No, there really isn’t a quick way to do what you are asking to do since there is no batch resize available. You’d have to edit each image in the Media Library individually.

FWIW-the remaining upload space available, both in percentage and MB, is noted on every Upload page. Probably the only way you could miss it is if you are not posting from the Dashboard itself, but by email or some such.

Thanks justjennifer. I’ve never used the dashboard to upload images or posts, so I had never seen the Media Library page before yesterday. I use MS LiveWriter to post articles. It isn’t great, but it works…

Still, it would be really grand if WP would send out a notification when a user’s space was full or approaching full. Even a decent error message would have been helpful.

    cheers

Pete-I have to tell you that I think sending an email is a great idea and you should drop that into the Ideas forum.

Personally, I’ve been here close to 6 years and have used up about 1% on both my personal site and my photography site. I always resize and/or resample my images before inserting them in my posts for the sake of image quality. You might want to read more about this on tsp’s post on onecoolsitebloggingtips and the related links at the bottom of the post http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2008/05/03/how-good-is-wordpress-at-resizing-and-resampling-your-images/

Thanks again for your input Justjennifer. It took me about 2 years to fill my memory to 100%. I had no idea how much space I was using or about resizing my photos until it was already full and I read the onecoolsiteblogtips yesterday. I guess that I’ve learned a lesson to tell any of my friends who might decide to create a new blog. But now mine is all full and there isn’t much I can do, short of paying WP $20 a year forever to rent 10Gb of space.

That annual $20 for 10GB is pretty darn cheap as far as storage space goes and is worthwhile because you can:
    A. take your time resizing your existing images in the Media Library’s image editor.
    B. upload MP3s

    And the best news:

What happens to my files if I cancel my subscription?
You will not be able to upload any new files until you resubscribe to the Space Upgrade. Files that you have already uploaded will remain accessible.

So if you’ve been diligently resizing your existing photos over the course of a year, you may not need the upgrade again.

But before anything else, I’d take a couple of older posts and experiment with how that Media Library Image Editor resizing thing works out for you.

    Good luck!
