How to save and check changes before publishing

I am building a new site at the moment and I don’t want it to go live just yet. I can’t seem to find a way to save the changes I made and then be able to check the unpublished website to see what it looks like. All I can see is save draft, but that is not allowing me to see the changes.
I have seen people recommending to use a coming soon plug in, but I am hesitant about this one as I don’t want SEO to be affected in a negative way.
Basically I want the site to be hidden until it’s ready to be published.
Can someone help how to best go forward with this? Thankss
