How to separate domain names/blogs (disable redirect to primary domain)
-
I own two domains registered through WordPress. I don’t want one to redirect to the other. I want each to stand alone as separate sites. I’ve been searching for hours on support but have only found answers on how to move a domain to another host or registrar. I’d like to have both websites on WordPress but do not want them linked or redirected. Please let me know how to de-activate the “primary domain” function so that each domain name stands alone. Thank you very much!
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I can move one of your custom domains to another of your WordPress.com sites.
Just let me know the custom domain you’d like moved and the address of the WordPress.com site you’d like it transferred to, and I will be happy to help.
-
I would like to move occupyusatoday.com to occupyusatoday.com (and I will transfer some content from the other site below there).
I’d like arunkgupta.com to live at arunkgupta.com (and I will update the banner and content to reflect the new URL).
If I still need to designate a “primary” site for administrative purposes, that could be arunkgupta.com, but I otherwise want to keep them separate to the public.
Thanks a million, pmciano!

At present, your custom domains are associated with arunkgupta.wordpress.com. These domains can be moved to any of the following WordPress.com sites you own:
- occupythefilmfestival.wordpress.com
- occupyusatoday.wordpress.com
Once you clarify which custom domains (i.e., arunkgupta.com and occupyusatoday.com) you’d like associated with which WordPress.com sites, I will be happy to make the requested changes.
-
If I associate both custom domains (arunkgupta.com and occupyusatoday.com) with the site “occupyusatoday.wordpress.com,” will that site appear in the address bar of arunkgupta.com or in any other public/search function related to arunkgupta? Or is it just an internal admin linkage?
Or – do I need to secure a site called “arunkgupta.wordpress.com” (which I thought I had already?) to associate with arunkgupta.com?
Thanks and sorry for any confusion.

do I need to secure a site called “arunkgupta.wordpress.com” (which I thought I had already?) to associate with arunkgupta.com?
As I previously stated, both of your custom domains are already associated with arunkgupta.wordpress.com. The WordPress.com site arunkgupta.wordpress.com is where your content is being hosted.
Both of your custom domains direct visitors to the content you have hosted at arunkgupta.wordpress.com. To determine which URL a visitor sees in the address bar of their browser when they visit your WordPress.com site, you set a Primary Domain. At present, the Primary Domain for arunkgupta.wordpress.com is set to occupyusatoday.com:
https://arunkgupta.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains
If I associate both custom domains (arunkgupta.com and occupyusatoday.com) with the site “occupyusatoday.wordpress.com,” will that site appear in the address bar of arunkgupta.com or in any other public/search function related to arunkgupta?
As I’ve stated, this functionality is determined by whatever address you set as the Primary Domain for your WordPress.com site. Having multiple domains associated with a WordPress.com site will not have a deleterious effect on search functions.
For more information about the differences between domain registration, hosting, and mapping, please see our page All About Domains:

If you’d still like to move your custom domain(s), let me know, and I will be happy to oblige.

Thanks for your patient response!
Yes, please move my custom domain “occupyusatoday.com” to the site “occupyusatoday.wordpress.com.”
(And I will change the primary domain for the site “arunkgupta.wordpress.com” to “arunkgupta.com” so that URL will appear in the address bar.)
Thanks again!

It’s no problem!
I’ve moved occupyusatoday.com to occupyusatoday.wordpress.com, as requested.
You can set the Primary Domains for your sites here:

Great, thanks! One last question, though: When I visit arunkgupta.com now, it takes me to occupyusatoday.com, which, of course, is empty because I’m putting new content there. How do I get arunkgupta.com to just point to arunkgupta.wordpress.com and show what is there? This doesn’t seem to concern the primary domain function, as arunkgupta is the primary domain. Thanks again!
-
The domain arunkgupta.com is associated with arunkgupta.wordpress.com, which, at present, is not empty:
https://arunkgupta.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
The site’s Title is set to Arun K. Gupta and you have a header image that says Occupy USA Today, but the wordpress.com address for the site is arunkgupta.wordpress.com.
Your other custom domain, occupyusatoday.com, is pointing to a site that does not have content:
https://occupyusatoday.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
The title for this site is set to Occupy USA Today.
I hope this clarifies the issue for you, but let us know if you have additional questions.
-
Sorry – let me try to explain it another way: when my visitors type in “arunkgupta.com” in the search bar, they automatically get “occupyusatoday.com,” which does not yet have content. Please explain.
-
I have visited arunkgupta.com and viewed several of its pages, and it appears to be functioning correctly:
The issue encountered was most likely due to either the browser’s cache, or DNS not yet being up-to-date.
Can you please try clearing out the browser’s cache and cookies?
If you have further questions, please let us know.
-
PHEW! Yes, clearing the cache worked. It looks like we’re good to go and thanks again for all your help sorting this out. Happy new year!
-
Awesome! I’m glad your issue is resolved.
Happy New Year, and if you have any other questions regarding WordPress.com, please let us know :-)

Hello! I had one more question regarding my two blogs: occupyusatoday.com, now empty, will share the same appearance and a lot of the content from arunkgupta.com. It seems it would be easiest to copy the whole arunkgupta.com blog to occupyusatoday.com, then just delete the posts I don’t want. If so, what is the easiest way to do this? Thanks very much again!

You can export the content from arunkgupta.com and import it into occupyusatoday.com:
