How to set avatar for the fediverse?

    I’ve turned on the fediverse and people can see my posts. Yay! But it’s showing up with WordPress logo for the avatar. How can I change it? I’ve got the premium plan on wordpress.com.

    Hi there,

    You can easily change this by uploading your own avatar to your site profile. To do this, simply navigate to Settings, then go to General. Here, you’ll find the option to upload your own logo or preferred image, replacing the default WordPress avatar.

    Thanks @fstat, I already had my site icon set. After seeing your post I uploaded a new site icon to see if that would change things but it doesn’t seem like it has.

    Hi there,

    I can confirm that I see the new site icon when I visit your site in a standard browser window, where it displays as the “favicon” for your site. Here is what I see:

    We don’t directly control how often this image is updated in the fediverse though. For example if I check on Mastodon I see they are still using the old avatar. I can tell it is cached (and likely not up to date) because of the image URL they are using contains the word “cache” in it, as shown here:

    I did not see a way to update this in the fediverse (services like Twitter and Facebook often feature a developer tool for this but I could not find the equivalent) but it is likely that it will update on it’s own within a few days. If you continue to see this issue after a short wait can you share where you are seeing the old avatar displayed so we can take a closer look directly?
