How to set "Full Width, No Sidebar" Template on Categories page?

Because I cannot an actual “Page” to the menu, there is no option to set the desired Template of a category page. Am I missing something?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

This doesn’t actually help me set up my blog in the way I envisioned it.

I want one front page two columns, other pages categorized full width post chains. Not every page on my blog needs 10 links to other people’s blogs and the user doesn’t need to see those links all the time. I feel this is a very simple and common use case and that it should be addressed if it is not possible.

    That said, here’s the workaround:

Okay, you are allowed one proper “posts” page. Create a page.

Under settings -> reading when you set a static front page you can also set a defined “posts” page. Since you can access the page in the UI… you can choose a template. woohoo.

This is still a kludgy workaround, since you can now only have one page with the desired theme showing posts.

Oh, I lied. You can’t. Page Attributes is contextual and doesn’t let you set the desired Template on a page used for your posts.

Man WordPress is rigid and un-intuitive. Where with Blender, you learn of a contextal window and through it a new word of possibility expands, here contextual UI elements serve only as comical landmines, each taking with it a seemingly basic feature when you step on it.

it is truly and without anger the most frustrating software I have ever used. Google comes close with their… spaghetti.

  • Because I cannot an actual “Page” to the menu

You can add static pages to a custom menu by selecting from the Page section when adding your menu item.

there is no option to set the desired Template of a category page. Am I missing something?

That’s right, because category archives are automatically generated, not static pages, it’s not possible to assign a template for them.

As a workaround, you could create a manual category archive by using the Display Posts shortcode on a static page to which you’ve applied your desired template. You could then add this new static page to your custom menu.

    Basic example:

    [display-posts category="my-category-slug"]

Sorry to hear you’ve found WordPress unintuitive – I can see why you’ve been frustrated.

If there’s anything else we can help you with, please let us know!

  • Another workaround would be to use Custom CSS to modify category archives to be full-width. That would require a Premium or Business plan, though. If you do decide to pursue that avenue, let me know and I’ll be glad to help with the necessary code.
