How to set the 'public' photo for sharing a post on Facebook?

How do I set what photo from a post is used in the ‘publicizing’ of a post on Facebook? The ‘featured image’ function in WordPress only changes the image on the WordPress page for the post, but not in the Facebook ad on my wall…

There is no automatic way to do that. Facebook sometimes chooses the first picture in a post, but not always.
What I do is to write a post normally,
then write a custom excerpt with 1 picture.
In the text editor I cut/copy all of the code except for the custom excerpt.
Paste the code for the post into a plain text editor.
Then publish.
As soon as Facebook picks up the post, I delete the custom excerpt.
Then paste the code for the post into the text editor.

Where do you go to write a custom excerpt?
Where is the text editor where you cut/copy the code? and is this different than the “plain text editor”?
So do both the post and the customer excrpt end up in the same poste published to Facebook?

Unfortunately, we have no control over the images that Facebook chooses to display or when they choose to flush their image caches. We really only send them the URL of the post, and they hunt through that for the excerpt and images to include.
