How to set up a simple site on WordPress ie not a blog

I went to a training telling us how to set up a simple site eg a sales letter on WordPress using a normal domain name, not a WordPress extension. Under features on the WordPress home page it says this can be done but I cannot find any info anywhere telling me how.
Please don’t frighten me with too much techie knowledge!
