How to show 1 post on homepage, multiple posts on archive page?

  I only wish to show 1 post on my blog homepage (so that the reader focuses on only the most updated post), but I would like users to see multiple posts when they click on an archive link (i.e. ‘October 2010’).

  As it is, under ‘Reading Settings’, I have indicated that ‘Blog pages show at most 1 posts’. But this is annoying for a user who would want to browse a list of archived posts (which show post title, excerpt, and ‘Continue Reading’).

  I know how to change this with a WordPress.org blog since I have access to the code, but is there a way to accomplish this with a WordPress.com blog?

  The only theme that doesn’t behave this way is Modularity Lite.
