How to show excerpts instead of full entries in my blog?

I found two ways to show excerpts instead of the full entries in my blog, but one requires me too install a plug-in (which I can’t do anymore in the current WP version) and the second one wants me to change the index file, which I can’t since I have a Free plan. Is there another way I haven´t found yet? Thanks for your help!
