How to show many posts at once?

  I tried to make my blog show many posts at once (5 would be a good number). But it does not work, it still shows only one. Why?

  What I did was to go to Settings – Reading, and there I changed “Blog pages show at most” to 5.
  Why does that not work?

  Your help would be much appreciated.
