how to show posts in address bar

    I’m struggling to understand how to use the block editor for my new website with a blog (in twenty nineteen theme). How do I get the title/heading of an individual blog post to show up in the browsers address bar so that I can copy and paste it elsewhere enabling people to link straight to one particular post? I gave my post a title in H2 headings. In the old method I would just click on the title of any post and it would appear in the address bar, but this doesn’t seem to be allowed now.

    The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there!

    To add a title to your post in the block editor, you’ll add it right on top of the post. There is a designated space for a title on every post or page, have a look here.

    If, you do not see this space, please attach a screenshot to your media library and let us know here, we’ll have a look. You can follow the instructions described here.

    You can also modify the slug, the piece of text that’s added at the end of your site’s address to identify a particular post or page:

    Here’s some more information about that:

    @jeanmarg,

    In the old method I would just click on the title of any post and it would appear in the address bar…

    I was unable to find your latest posts page, but the 2019 posts archive page, https://jeanmdavison.wordpress.com/2019/, shows one post titled “blog.” The title of that post is a hyperlink. Hovering over it with a mouse displays the post URL in the lower left corner of the screen, and clicking on it brings one to the post itself.

    How do I get the title/heading of an individual blog post to show up in the browsers address bar so that I can copy and paste it elsewhere…

    Whenever one visits any post, the post’s URL will be visible in the address bar. However, you may also copy the URL from the hyperlinked post title at the latest posts page (aka the blog page) and at archive pages.

    Sorry fresatomica I still haven’t figured out how to get a screen shot (presumably you mean of my blog post page in the editing mode?) and get it into my library and send it on here. I’ll try again later but I don’t think it will show you anything.

    There is no designated space showing saying ‘Add title’, so I (no doubt wrongly) did what I wanted to be the first blog post title as a heading. The other title ‘Blog’ was the overall title for all the blog posts, the one that shows in the menu and I think was already a ‘given’ in the templates when I was setting up the pages and posts. Would it be easier for me to delete the post page, as I probably did something wrong in setting it up? Maybe if I try again from scratch, the ‘Add title’ message will appear?

    Thanks for the ‘slugs’ info, which I’m sure will be helpful when (if) I get the title done properly.

    And thanks also for your comments musicdoc1. I’ve no idea why the site link didn’t enable you to find my latest posts page.

    PS. I was using the Twenty Nineteen theme and I haven’t changed anything but I now see it says ‘using ‘Refresh 2019’, but I take it there’s no significance in that?

    @jeanmarg,

    I’ve no idea why the site link didn’t enable you to find my latest posts page.

    Instead of the “latest posts page,” I should have said “posts page.” I was referring to the dynamic page on a site that displays all posts in reverse-chronological order. This page is also known as the “blog page.” The menu on your site doesn’t have a link to the posts page. The “blog” item in the menu links to a single post, not the posts page.

    Are you using a third-party theme? I don’t find “Refresh 2019” among the WordPress.com themes showcase.

    Sorry, I missed your last post. I’m guessing that “Refresh 2019” might be an update of the Twenty Nineteen theme.
