How to SQL?

  • Unknown's avatar

I need the ability to do a little plain vanilla mysql programming to add some fill-in-the-blank forms, and maybe some ftp, to my website. How do wordpress sites accomplish this? My blog is for our Boy Scouts troop, non profit, and we’d like the solution to be as close to zero cost as possible. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

I suggest you read this entry WordPress.com vs WordPress.org: The Differences There is no upgrade you can purchase from wordpress.com that will provide access to the database, FTP access, etc. Then, given what you state you want to do you will have to hire a webhost and set up your own wordpress.org install and move your existing content into it. http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/

You already have a fill in the blank contact form built in – but it will not drive any SQL – there is no FTP access to WordPress.COM sites

No way if you stay on WordPress.COM you can do what you want – you might be able to do something with Google Docs but that is above my pay grade

Another might work would be to use Adobe Acrobat forms ( PDF file they download and send to you) – but not free for the software and again I have not really worked with that

I really like having the website at .com, easy for me to post & administer the site without the hassle of hosting the server. Someone else has the SQL smarts & wants to go paperless with forms. So is it possible to host just the SQL forms & files somewhere else and link to those from the wordpress site?

Yes you should be able to link to a page on another web site that can drive SQL for the forms – you just can’t query or much of anything to your WordPress.COM site – but the link to another page off site should work just fine
