How to stop black bars appearing in wp.com stories shared to Facebook?

    In the last few weeks, when I share a wp.com post to my Facebook timeline via Publicize, if the featured image has a rectangular landscape orientation, black letterbox bars are added at top and bottom to make the FB feature image square.

    If I share to FB by pasting the post URL, the original image orientation is maintained.

    So I’m wondering if this letterboxing is taking place in WordPress, and if so, how can I prevent it from occurring?
