How to stop bogus Gmail subscribers

    I have had my WordPress blog since 2009. It is designed for researchers in the academic and applied world of research. Only in the past 5-6 months have I started receiving many bogus subscribers. They all provide gmail email addresses, most of which don’t really exist. I don’t know why I am suddenly getting these bogus subscribers and it is annoying. Is it because WordPress is now encouraging people who sign up to create a blog to connect with all other blog owners? It needs to stop. Each day I have to go through the process of deleting these subscribers.
