How to stop ‘save-image’ downloads …
-
Hi there …
… just seeking knowledge of how to avoid people perusing my site downloading the imagery on my site such as my artistic photos (see link below). Is there a tool or script I can use to stop people saving the images to their PC or wordpress watermark that can appear as they attempt to right-click download etc?

Hi there, If you upgrade to the Business plan, you can install plugins to deal with this but effectively there is no such protection one can use. It’s just as easy to take a screenshot of an image.
I’d suggest either watermarking your images or making them much smaller so less interesting to potential thieves, or both. More info in this support guide: https://en.support.wordpress.com/prevent-content-theft/
Hope that helps.

Many thanks for the tips. My imagery is only at 2000p and compressed jpeg’s and my originals are 12000p HQ so certainly not massive res’ although added precaution would be fab’. You mention plugins if I upgrade. If they add the no-right click + any other precautions then fab’ (?)

Hello again, Just my opinion but even 2000 px on the long edge is pretty large for displaying on the web even at lower resolution. Have a look at the quick specs at the bottom of the theme showcase page for Snaps https://wordpress.com/theme/snaps
Looking at “trolley_consumer” that image is just over 2MB and at 300ppi. If you have many such images on your site not only will this eat up your free 3GB storage quickly, it will also mean slow loading for anyone viewing your site, especially on mobile data. This has an impact on search engines as well. (The only time I’d upload such large images is when I want someone to download it, like a commission, and then not on a publicly visible and indexed site.) Although you might not need this link, you can read more about image optimization here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/
Personally, the distance between having a free site and paying US$300/year for the Business plan in order to use plugins for only this reason would make me think twice. However, there are a lot of other advantages to the Business plan, if the additional features suit your needs. Much depends on what you want to do with your site.
You can read more about all the plan features at https://en.support.wordpress.com/plan-features/ and https://wordpress.com/pricing/ where there are two tabs
