How to Tell if a Link is Referrer Spam?

  • Unknown's avatar

I have already sent a note to the staff, but the one today got me. I had been commenting on Blogspot blogs using my profile here at WordPress and the link from a supposed referrer from looked legit. The link looked like a standard blogspt link. After clicking on it, and it was loading, it changed a couple different times on the bottom bar of my browser. I cannot remember what they were, but I ended up at a site that was not a blog.

Is there anyway to tell if these links are legitimate or spam before they are clicked on? In the past, I usually have a couple clues that they are spam. I don’t remember all the places I have commented at recently to rely on my memory. Is the only solution to this is to not ever click on the referring links?

    Thank you for any input.

What I usually do is copy and paste (without clicking on it) a suspicious looking link into google search and see what comes up in the text accompanying it on the search page. If it’s a blog, then I put the URL (web address) of it into another search and look at the cached page of it to check it out.

There may be another way to tell, in which case I’m sure someone else will give you some other advice, but this is what I do.
