how to tell media file is used
-
I wish to delete media files that are no longer in use which were uploaded in now deleted pages. How do I know if they are not linked to another page or post? Is there a way to tell?
-
Hi,
Just go to Media Library, there is an option to view ‘unattached’ files, (where it states at the top ‘view all’ ~ it’s a dropdown) that way you can delete them knowing there is no attachment to any post / page etc. (Making sure it’s not your ‘gravatar or background image I guess, as I’ve never deleted in this way before)

The site you are asking about does not seem to be hosted on WordPress.COM so you need to make friends over at WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using.
This site is for support of sites hosted on WordPress.COM. You should address your questions to WordPress.ORG the keepers of the software you are using: http://wordpress.org/support/
The forum at WordPress.ORG is not connected to WordPress.COM so you will need to open an account at .ORG if you do not already have one. You may use the same email at WordPress.ORG as you do at WordPress.COM.

Not accurate at all – you can use Media files in your blog and they can still be “unattached” – thus if you can still delete files from the Media Library that are used in your blog
But note also, you are in the wrong forum

OK.. auxclass... seemed that way for me though, only the background and gravatar was to be ‘seen’ there.
Do you have a link for me to check that out; about media (I’d like it for future reference) As I’ve been looking, can’t find anything… and Ilike to pick up ideas etc along the way.

that’s fine, galois.. but was asking about his comment and his quoting what I said about media files in general, if anyone was to click on this thread in the future, it would help clarify and confirm his opinion as it clearly states differently at the support section on Unattached Files and I use a lot of images.
-
The link is about unattached files, files used are not always attached, I speak from personal experience on this. The whole link you gave is about attaching files that are used but not marked as attached
The only way to check completely is search on each file name you have a question about, note also that a file can be attached to a single Post or Page but still used in more than one Post or Page and only show the single Post or Page the file is attached to
If you click on the Unattached link, all of the media files not associated with a post or page (i.e. you did not upload them from within a post or page) will be displayed. Attaching files (images, specifically) to a post is not always necessary,

I know, I know.
But I was referring to the differences between WordPress.org and WordPress.com: do not work the same and this forum is exclusive to WordPress.com -
You be welcome
did not want some poor person to delete files that are used on their site – we have enough problems with people “cleaning up” their site and deleting files / media used in Posts and Pages
-
Certainly! Nice to know auxclass, would not want that to happen either, that’s why I ‘needed a little more’ just in case someone was to look. Or I needed to in the future. Thnx again.
@galois I know it works different to .org and had not realised when I typed my comment about it, merely needed it to be cleared up by auxclass… which happened (as I was referring to .com).
