How to transfer a format website to WordPress
-
Currently, I am trying to transfer a website hosted on a platform called Format into WordPress. I don’t see an available plugin but was wondering if there is another workaround instead of manually uploading all the content. Format site has a ton of blogs that would be a lot of manual work to reupload.
WP.com: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

Hi there,
I have never heard of Format before. Would you mind providing the URL of your site so I can take a look at the platform? In general, if you can generate an XML file, you should be able to migrate your post content over to WordPress.com. So, I would find out if Format has that option. If you can please provide me more information on your site and Format, I’d be happy to look further into it for you.
Thanks! -
@staff-doublebassd, yes I found my sitemap here: https://www.veggiemijas.com/sitemap.xml but not sure how to transfer this to WordPress.

Thank you! A sitemap is a different type of XML; it looks like it essentially shows all of your categories, but what we want would contain the content of all of your posts rather than a list of categories.
Does Format allow you to access or export your data? I’m trying to find something on their site, but I don’t see it and I’m guessing you’ll need to ask their support team. I can’t seem to find an RSS feed either; sometimes we can use that to get data but I’m not having luck here.
It’s possible you’ll need someone to set up a “scrape” of the site (copying the data that’s publicly accessible but using a program to do it) but I’d want to see if their support has any export features first. Or if you just want to go straight to hiring someone to handle it for you, I’d recommend checking in with the folks at Built By WordPress.com.

okay thank you, yeah I talked to format support, seems impossible to copy the content and only option is to recreate in WordPress.
is it as simple as just clicking use a domain I own > transfer domain > and checkout?
what would the correct path be between transfer your domain or connect your domain ? If we are moving entire website on WordPress, would transfer your domain be the better option?
Is there anyone I can speak to that can walk me through this process? I have create websites before so recreating is no issue other than time, but I haven’t worked with domain transfers at all.

Hey there,
Happy to help you with this.
Connecting and/or transferring a domain, would be moving the domain only, not the site itself.
Transferring the domain would be to change registrars, which is who the site is registered with. So for example, if the domain was purchased and registered first with GoDaddy, and is then transferred to WordPress.com, then WordPress.com would be the registrar and the registrations fees would be settled with WordPress.com.
Who is the domain currently registered with? To transfer the domain, please see this guide here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/incoming-domain-transfer/
Connecting the domain, is where the registrar stays the same, and the domain DNS settings are configured to point at WordPress.com servers. Connecting a domain is free to do with a WordPress.com plan, as we wouldn’t be the domain registrars.
Please se this guide on how to connect a domain: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/connect-existing-domain/

This is completely your preference, you may find it preferable to keep everything under one roof, but this is not essential. Connecting a domain is quicker process, and can take up to 72 hours to complete.

We’ll happily walk you through the process, which ever option you decide :) . One thing to note here, is that in order to set a custom primary domain, the site would need to have a paid plan, at a minimum the personal plan.
Do you know what features or functionality you’re looking to recreate? Perhaps I can offer insights into which plan would be most suitable.
Looking forward to hearing more!

Hi there!
We don’t offer phone support at WordPress.com. However, you can access live chat support with the WordPress.com Premium plan. The Premium plan will give you access to live chat support on weekdays, while the WordPress.com Business plan will give you 24/7 live chat support.
If you’re not sure which plan to choose between Premium and Business, please feel free to let us know more about your site (what features do you need on your site, for example). We’ll be happy to suggest the best plan for you.
Alternatively, you can get started with the WordPress.com Premium plan and upgrade later if more features are needed.
