How to transfer Admin priviledges from user to make an admin?
-
Our Non-Profit GMUW has a blog (Community Impact). The initial administrator who set up the blog is no longer working with the GMUW. I have been taking over but only as author and publisher. I need to have Administrator rights – Can you help?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

The original account (email address actually) owns any blog.
Best – get the owner to transfer the blog to a new account that has an email that will stay with your organization
An Admin can promote your privileges. If only the original account is an admin you will need to have them promote you to Admin. If they are no longer active with your organization you should have them transfer the blog to someone that will stay with the group (see above)
Note also that Editors can do almost as much as an Admin and change any Post or Page
WordPress.COM will not take a blog away from someone just because an Author says so – blogs need to be transferred by the owner.

Hi there,
As auxclass mentioned, any administrator on the blog can make you an admin. We have more information about that here: User Roles — Changing User Roles
If the blog owner no longer wants control of it, they can transfer ownership to you by following this guide: Moving a Blog — Transferring Your Blog to Another WordPress.com User or Account
Please let me know if I can provide any further help with this. :)

I appreciate the response, however the case is that we can not locate the individual who created/administered the blog for the Green Mountain United Way – so we don’t know what the email address or password used was.
The About page opn the site is the individual who administered it before – there was no other admin – unfortunately.

So as you can see, since the individual cannot be found or asked, and has not posted or administered the site since he left, we are stuck.
Any other help to respolve this?

Hi there,
There are a couple administrators on the blog, and any administrator (not just the blog owner) can give you an administrator role on the blog. The instructions for doing that are here: User Roles — Changing User Roles
Without hearing from the current blog owner, I’m not able to do anything more. However, you’re welcome to start your own blog if you’d like. That way you’ll own it and have control over it. You can do that here: https://wordpress.com/signup/

Wow, we who manage blogs for organizations need a better answer! Can an author or editor at least backup the blog to transfer its contents?
Or do we need to be sure there’s a backup admin for every blog (you’ve advised us to have only one per blog), and/or an envelope to be opened in the classic case of “admin gets hit by a truck”?

Not a bad idea actually – or at least have the email / account owner that is one that stays with an organization. Or a second account / Admin in the envelope.
Setting a blog here is very easy and organizations will have someone set up a blog for the group and until the person moves on nobody gives much thought to the blog ownership or who has control of a blog.
I have seen several of these in the forum over my four years helping, always tough, since how does WordPress.COM know that a person wanting to take a blog over is legitimate and not just a disgruntled person with a grudge against the blog owner (yes that has happened several times). Nobody has yet came up with a real good solution (one suggestion was to have a question box pop up on blog registration asking if the blog was for a group or company and should there be a second Admin associated with the group or company).
To Export the whole blog takes and Admin.
Try leaving a comment on your blog – if the comments are set to Moderate, the comment might go to the email of an Admin and they might get back to you.

In looking at the About Page – I see a large part of a resume with business & organization names that the person has been with. Vermont is a small state. Most groups will help you locate their members, most will not give out personal info but many will pass on a request to contact a group a person has been involved with in the past.
Have you tried contacting places he has been involved with?
Maybe you could also convince the staff here to send an email to the Admin on your behalf asking for help with your blog? You are a service group, that tends to attract people that are helpful.

I thank you all for your help! We were able to find the last GMUW email address and have the password reset so that now I can add other administrators and remove those that are no longer associated with it…The About Me page has been updated with my info now!
Thank you again for all of your help!.
::But yes, there really SHOULD be an alternate plan in case the Admin gets run over by a truck (figuratively speaking of course).::

Glad it turned out well
yes an alternate plan should be in place, but many times it is not thought of until after the fact. I have seen the same problem dozens of times in the forum over a few years.
Hopefully you have the envelope in the safe-deposit box with the relevant info in it.
Good luck
