How to transfer from a developer site to wordpress.com?

  • Unknown's avatar

I hired a developer to customize the Adventure theme for me but he didn’t use my account. He is developing it on his own system. How would I transfer the work he has done over to WordPress.com ? Also, is it possible to put videos on my blog?

    thanks!

    Hi Robin,

This is a difficult situation. Without knowing the changes that this designer has made, there is no way of knowing if the changes will be able to be transferred over to WordPress.com at all. If they are only cosmetic in nature (CSS changes), then everything should be fine and he can just provide you with the CSS file, I can show you where to enter it (as long as you have the Custom Design upgrade), and your site will begin working just fine.

However if he has made changes to the actual theme files, then this will definitely not work. We do not allow such changes within our system (as any changes would impact anyone else with the same theme).

Instead, if you wanted the exact theme which he had created for you, you would need to install a self-hosted WordPress.org site with a hosting company. We have a list of hosts who we recommend for WordPress.org:

I appreciate the response. I wanted him to make the customization using the template and he went to town doing what ever he wanted so he has changed the theme. If I do separate hosting, how do I make updates?

If you go with a self-hosted WordPress.org installation you’ll find that it is very similar to WordPress.com. You’ll need to maintain the software, but it’s very similar to owning a computer. When it tells you there are updates available, you just need to click the button to update them. While there is no online support like me available to help in quite the same way, there are still quite active forums which can help you out right here:

Everyone starts out new at some point, so there is tons of information for people who are new!

I appreciate the reply! Just found out that the developer emulated the theme pack but didn’t use it. Now I want the developer to go back and redo it using the theme pack since that is what I had wanted. But I want to keep back up of some of the work I did. I see copy page in the dashboard but can’t figure out how to make copies of my pages which could be backups. How does one copy a page?

Your best bet would probably just to do a backup through our own export feature. That will give you a full copy of your site (though without the images) for your records. If you want the images as well, you would need to take the same steps and then import your site to a WordPress.org site like I mentioned before. During the import process the new site goes and fetches all of your images and stores them on your new site, so a complete copy is in two places.

Here’s a help article on doing exports:

If I wasn’t clear on this one (it can be a bit complicated), let me know what didn’t come across and I’ll be happy to explain better!
