How to try out WordPress?

Hello! I am planning on building my own website and I have decided I want to try WordPress. Since I am not sure wether this tool is the right one for me I was hoping I could try it out for free before deciding whether its worth investing in. However, it isn’t allowing me to try out WordPress without buying a domain and hosting. Is there any way I can try out the tool first (locally) without having to immediately invest in it? Thank you :)

When you choose the site name you wish to opt in to, the “free” opt-in will be at number 3 in the list and it will be free for life until you decide to upgrade.

I have the same question. The link you provided, forces you to choose a domain. There is not a “number 3” to choose.

Did you type something into the domain box to see the free option below the two paid for offerings? You can keep trying variations in that top domain box to reduce the amount of numbers after your words etc before proceeding and clicking “select” against the free address.
