How to turn off URL masking

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi,
I set up my free blog in WordPress 11 years ago when I switched from Blogger. I have my own domain, and set it up to forward anyone going to my personal .com to the myname.wordpress.com URL. At the time I wanted to force the domain to stay in the URL bar, and somehow set it up so that no matter what page you went to in my site, or hopped from page to page, the URL bar always showed my domain. I no longer want this to be the case, but I can’t find anywhere to turn it off. I’ve looked through all the WordPress settings, but the closest I can find is in the “domains” or “settings” pages, where it seems to give me the option to START doing this… implying it’s not currently set up. I’m starting to wonder if it’s somehow being done through my domain provider and not WordPress, but that doesn’t make sense. Help!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, You’re correct. Domain masking needs to be changed or removed at your domain registrar’s control panel.

But is this for jeloca.com? I see that you registered your domain here with WWD so let me flag this thread for Staff to provide you with exact instructions for changing that since I don’t find any reference in our documentation.

Are you wanting instead to use your domain jeloca.com on your WPcom site or simply continue with jeloca.wordpress.com?

Yes, that is the correct site.

I want “jeloca.com” to keep forwarding people quietly and automatically to “jeloca.wordpress.com” but now allow whatever page you’re on to show in the URL bar. (Whereas it currently always shows “jeloca.com” in the URL bar which means page refreshes will boot you back to the main page, etc, and makes page saving a pain for people who don’t know where to find direct page links).

I tried to find any documentation of registration with you guys but cannot. (Younger me was dumb.) What, exactly, did I do?

Separately, I’ve been considering adding or mapping my domain. Will it break all the “jeloca.wordpress” links out there?

Update: I contacted my domain registrar. Something fishy is going on because they are not doing the masking either… it’s being done by the initial company I used when I first got my site. (Which explains why I didn’t find the masking info in their user settings). So I will take care of that on my end and the problem is technically solved.

But I would like to know who/where to contact to find out what I registered with WWD as I would like to clean everything up once and for all and move the domain to WordPress along with an upgrade to a paid plan.

    Registrar Information:
    Name: Wild West Domains, LLC

Hi again, WildWestDomains is the registrar for Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com.

Please be patient for Staff to reply here. They can see what is happening on the back end of things and will sort you out. Thanks.

  • Hi Folks –

Thanks for the tag. Looking at jeloca.com I do see that it is registered with WWD but it’s not through WordPress.com. Looks like Sparkyservers.com registered your domain through WWD. You will want to contact them about the domain masking.

Thank you for your replies! It turns out there’s a glitch and the masking is being done by the company I used prior to Sparkyservers, over 10 years ago, even though I haven’t had an account or bill/etc with them since. I’ve decided to clean things up and move it all directly through WordPress so it will no longer be an issue. Thanks!
